Description of the project
Summary
In 2019, Tones on the Stones, a non-profit foundation, acquired an abandoned quarry committing to its redevelopment, turning a site doomed to be a landfill into Tones Teatro Natura (TTN), a theatre amidst woods, pastures, and mountain gardens, dedicated to innovation, performing arts, well-being, and educational activities.
This was a strategic intervention that addresses the significant issue of exhausted quarries: the Ossola Valley has a considerable number of abandoned and inactive quarries. TTN proposes a model capable of generating positive processes and cultural, social, and economic development in a critical environment
The project is focused on culture and sustainability as the engine for the economic and social development of our territory, beautiful but at risk of cultural pauperization and progressive abandonment by the youngest. At the core of a vast ecosystem, TTN connected Art and Nature to create unique contents and opportunities that contribute to environmental, social, and cultural evolution. As a gateway between its territory and the world, the project has an inclusive and participatory approach, following the guidelines of ISO 20121 compliance, involving local businesses and major national and international brands which contributed to the making of TTN.
TTN does not intend to deny the industrial past and the intangible heritage linked to extractive activities, which have been an economic cornerstone of the territory for centuries and have marked the architecture of local towns and rural areas. However, it aims to capitalize on this heritage by projecting it into a contemporary context where environmental, inclusive, and sustainable dimensions represent the foundations of both architectural and strategic design
The new generations have increasingly distanced themselves from the history of this territory. This project has built a bridge, bringing to the forefront a sense of belonging but redefining it with new access keys and fresh content

Key objectives for sustainability
Our project is sustainable under many POV:
1) Environmental upgrading and building process of TTN:
We have enhanced stone processing waste, treated and reused depleted industrial iron materials, virtually managed the water cycle, and created eco-sustainable toilets with phytoremediation systems, innovative energy systems, the use of low-impact EcoPlanet concrete.
2) Space and activity management strategy.
The events and initiatives that take place in TTN are ISO 20121 compliant, the system that evaluates events from a social, environmental, and economic point of view. Plastic-free space, car sharing and transport agreement, accurate waste management that involves weighing each type to reduce the amount of mixed waste, MaterB for food and beverage products.
We received a special mention at the 2023 BuyGreen Culture Award/European GreenFEST Project "for being a virtuous example of how a territorial challenge can become an economic, social, and cultural lever for a fragile territory, with culture and sustainability at its core as an engine for socio-economic development."
3) Content for users:
At TTN, we engage the community and propose new visions because ecological conversion will work if it appears socially desirable. Among the strategic projects we have:
a. Campo Base Festival, that explores the relationship between man and nature. The format features practices of reconnection with the natural environment to reaffirm its centrality in human experience. Sporting personalities, thinkers and scientists have been invited to share their experiences, to open discourses of meaning and to stimulate reflection.
b. RiGenerAzioni, a project for students aged 6 to 18 that includes environmental education, addressing the climate crisis, local biodiversity, training on Agenda 2030, creative reuse, and exploration of innovations through the presentation of startups operating in the circular economy

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality
The architectural strategy is based on three fundamental principles: modularity, transparency, flexibility. These aspects determine a new and constant dialogue with the surrounding nature and future users who can shape the space according to their needs. The project establishes a relationship between the territory's natural context and history, allowing a continuity that draws its roots in the past, handing future generations the chance of using the spaces and contributing to their transformation. The entire project is based on the geometric lines defined by the quarry, respecting the morphology of the landscape. The theatre maintains the majesty of the place, and all its natural elements now serve new purposes. In addition to the events area, the project includes several ancillary functions for the development of all activities. The master plan consists of two stages, one for events of up to 1,500 seated and 2,500 standing, and a second for performances of up to 500 spectators, a ticket office, a refreshment area, plus technical, workshop areas for educational activities. Within the area, you can find a small sustainable educational park with climbing gyms, life paths, and spaces to think and relax.
There's also a lot of technology and innovation; in fact, we've become an example for immersive setups: Opera, Musicals, Contemporary Multimedia Arts Installations. This young theatre is already known throughout Europe for festivals like Nextones.
Thanks to the technological setups, leading academies are seeking educational collaborations.
TTN is an interdisciplinary accelerator that values visionary practices by designing future ways of living at the crossroads of art, culture, science, and nature.
It’s a cross-cutting project that cares about the quality of life of European citizens without losing sight of green and digital innovations.
It’s a visionary project that aims to inspire behaviours, thoughts, and lifestyles that embrace the principles of the NBP

Key objectives for inclusion
Due to its geographical location, at the crossroads of valleys, the challenge of our project is to conceive the theatre as a "centre" that offers the energies and dynamism of a large city. The purpose is to regenerate by flipping the vision: no longer indefinite no-man's lands, but a dynamic community that envisions the future and develops rules for coexistence, closeness, and participation.
The main beneficiaries are the young residents, who are entrusted with active roles and increasing responsibilities to contribute to reversing the trend of demographic, social, cultural, and economic impoverishment of this peripheral mountainous territory. It's a process of inclusion that aligns with a broad strategic direction benefiting hundreds of students and thousands of young citizens each year.
Our main objective is to keep constant and strong the engagement and involvement of the public of all ages towards Tones Teatro Natura. We achieve this thanks to:
1) Varied programming aimed at different cultural and age targets so that no one feels excluded, creating a balanced mix between niche projects and events featuring popular artists. We promote programming that champions genderless and genderfluid artists.
2) Discounted tickets and packages for students, elderly, disabled.
3) Projects with third sector entities to include disadvantaged and migrants, attracting the interest of the local population, which has sometimes expressed intolerance.
4) Agreements with local associations with which actions and events have been planned to develop a sense of belonging.
5) Cultural formats that involve the participation of the local community in the planning.
6) Entrust services for the management of TTN and ancillary services to local subjects so that the project is considered positive also in terms of economic return.
7) Involvement of small local entrepreneurs (B&B, agri-food producers) to generate a network of relationships and business for everyone

How Citizens benefit
TTN is a unique case in Italy: it was established within just 3 years thanks to a participatory process that involved local and national companies, authorities, foundations actively contributing through donations and the provision of services and products in-kind. Our courage was rewarded thanks to the quality of the environmental redevelopment project and the transformation of the industrial site into a hub for culture. However, it's prominent to underline that what acted as a driving force were the project's contents themselves: the European principles of inclusion and sustainability, as well as an artistic quality that was already part of our history. In fact, the audience has grown year after year: 1.700 in 2020, 2.600 in 2021, 4.800 in 2022, and 7.000 in 2023.
Today, the activities at TTN are very diverse and well-participated:
Activities for schools.
A season of multidisciplinary performances featuring big immersive shows, Jazz with a focus on women, Dance and Theatre, Pop.
Nextones, international festival of digital arts and electronic music with an audience coming from all around Europe.
Awareness Campus and outdoor activities for the well-being of citizens.
Campo Base, a regenerating festival created jointly with local associations, citizens, and micro-enterprises, promotes green culture through experience, active learning rooted in memory not only from a logical but also a sensory perspective. Engaging with the mountains makes activism real, broadens the perspective, and instils new awareness, far from politicized slogans and greenwashing that prevail.
In just two years, we have developed a community that inhabits TTN for many different reasons: education, training, art, culture, well-being, and sports. An outstanding result, especially considering the geographical location and cultural isolation of mountainous people. The locals proudly embraces this new space and seeks connections both with its past and current economic and social reality

Innovative character
We have no news about another cultural entity that has had the same courage as we had to undertake an environmental restoration to transform an industrial site into a cultural hub. Where a landfill was planned, a theatre has emerged, and with steadfast determination we have managed to reintroduce people to cultural experiences after the pandemic crisis by proposing new modes of engagement. Furthermore, the rapid implementation of the plan, based on the emotional commitment to the European principles of the project's content, was also unique in Italy. Today, we have a cultural production centre in a remote mountain location, capable of attracting artists and generating innovative projects that are more likely to happen in large cities.
We navigate a balance between local needs and international prestige, creating a bridge of exchange between local youth and metropolitan/European peers, trying and covering the evident cultural gap. We are a reference point for environmental and civic education for schools in the mountainous area but engage in national high-level training for performance trades related to new immersive staging technologies. We leverage vertical networks with the third sector, local tourism, outdoor and agri-food sectors. Simultaneously, we are involved in national and international horizontal networks for artistic production.
Despite our geographical location, we have a national and international audience that follows our projects and artistic productions, managing to imbue the space with a dramaturgical value. It's a space with a dramaturgical significance, and thanks to the natural context in which it is immersed, it conveys values that no traditional theatre could transmit.

Disciplines/knowledge reflected
The design was commissioned in 2020 to a firm of young architects in Milan. They teamed up later with a group of local architects and engineers with extensive experience in the stone sector. The project has seen from the start a strong engagement from local stone companies who have supported it by proposing sustainability solutions and technical simplification, both linked to the varieties and functionalities of the materials. High-profile consultancies related to Multimedia Entertainment Engineering Design have been activated allowing the space to become a place of innovation and experimentation in the field of live entertainment. This was a very articulated process with various design revisions following the activities for the public that never ceased. This alternation allowed for a deep understanding of the space and identifying the best solutions without wasting economic resources, finding the best answers to the emerging needs over time.
For the value, strategic and mission part, residencies were held with philosophers, writers, and artists, leading to the drafting of a Manifesto.
The foundation grew rapidly, increasing both in quality and quantity in its personnel. New management skills became necessary to handle an organization and a theatre that, in just two years, led to tripling the annual budget. It was also crucial to implement the entire digital infrastructure to manage the multitude and variety of projects. Consultancies for fundraising and for managing the extensive network of stakeholders and project partners became necessary.
From the very beginning, we aimed to complement our activities with a system for sustainable social, environmental, and economic management, achieving ISO 20121 certification. For two years, we have had a sustainability and certification manager who monitors all our processes and guides Tones Teatro Natura towards continuous improvement.

Methodology used
The project was conceived and designed from the very beginning with a sharing approach in mind: with institutions, with citizens, with private businesses, and with local associations. No one was left behind. The commitment aimed to finding the balance between gathering high professional skills, making sure of having structural and infrastructural quality, and at the same time using great simplicity and always inclusive objectives in all our communication. The goal was not to position Tones Teatro Natura as a magnificent but alien spaceship that somehow landed in the middle of our mountains, but as a theatre that arose from the historical and social foundations of the area, and it’s owned and taken care of by everybody. For the entire infrastructure, in-depth studies were carried out to make long-lasting choices with the lowest environmental impact and enhance the local stone heritage. As a result, today, Tones Teatro Natura doesn’t need almost any maintenance, offering at the same time great possibilities for modifying spaces through easily removable and relocatable modules to meet the needs of diversified activities, from live shows to climbing gyms.
The entire project, from environmental upgrading to the latest infrastructures, was designed in steps for two fundamental reasons: 1) to avoid making mistakes during a completely new path for our cultural organization, by harnessing resources from public and private entities and the commercial world; 2) to avoid interrupting the artistic production and our summer festivals. Over the course of two years, we alternated infrastructure work for 8 months a year and paused for 4 months for cultural programming. Today, Tones Teatro Natura operates 8 months a year, excluding only the coldest months.

How stakeholders are engaged
The first step in creating Tones Teatro Natura was to carry out "Before and After" in the summer of 2020, an Opera Studio with the participation of architects, philosophers, researchers, cultural operators, and artists, where everyone could support the project. At the same time, citizens met to gather their requests and ideas. All this was channelled into the architectural and strategic design of the theatre. In 2021, we acquired the property and engaged with the Piedmont Region for a two-year environmental redevelopment process. Following geological interventions, the project passed landscape assessments with the final approval of the Superintendent of Fine Arts. The Banking Foundations were important interlocutors and actors: they followed the planning, eventually contributed to the architectural part and financed a transitional experimentation project to identify the possible functions of the new space.
The Municipality of Crevoladossola was involved in setting up services aimed at better enjoyment and discovery of Tones Teatro Natura (street lighting, parking, roads, and connections). The project demonstrated a remarkable ability to attract private individuals and businesses who made goods and services available in-kind, enabling the theatre to be built in record time. Marble slabs to set up the stage, cables and electrical systems at symbolic prices, bleachers built with locally sourced materials cut to size and assembled with ancient techniques: the values of the project, deeply linked to the Agenda 2030, the beauty and uniqueness of the place, and the artistic and cultural quality of the programming, allowed something that had never happened before in Italy to become a reality. Involving local associations and businesses has contributed to developing a sense of belonging and ensured that citizens today feel a sense of pride and participation in Tones Teatro Natura, overcoming the scepticism and mental barriers typical of mountainous areas.

Global challenges
Our programming addresses the global challenges through several actions:
- Inviting artists capable of bringing deep observations on the biggest current topics, able to shake everybody’s consciences. The art and its creation are an instrument to us for tuning into new modes of perception and important catalysers of renewal energies.
- During the latest edition of Campo Base Festival, we hosted 100 Italian environmental activists who set up the first National Convention for Climate, giving them the ideal space to showcase their work to the public.
- We contribute to the education of young kids, presenting activities that nourish their environmental awareness. In our space management, we adopt strategies to reduce the impact of our events year after year, measuring all our work and choices through 37 indicators and a continuous monitoring plan: we do not use plastic for beverages and food, we weigh our waste after each event to reduce the amount of non-recyclable waste, we avoid disposable stage setups and utilize eco-friendly facilities for services.
- We promote rules of conduct through all our channels which we have called "Instructions for sustainable participants”.
- The 2030 Goals that we met and have been certified in 2023 are: #4, #5, #7, #10, #11, #15 and #17.
In our website, we have a page that narrates all our commitment: https://www.tonesteatronatura.com/sostenibilita/

Learning transferred to other parties
Tones Teatro Natura is a virtuous example of how territorial criticality (there are hundreds of abandoned quarries) can become an economic, social, and cultural lever for a truly fragile territory. New professions appear in a region that lacks opportunities: young people can return to living in peripheral mountain places if they have stimulating examples and options from strategic planning in networks involving social, business, and cultural sectors. The issue of exhausted quarries is a hot topic in Italy, and we usually deal with essential environmental redevelopment. However, virtuous reuse, which generates a new economy or becomes the bearer of cultural and social values, is not an absolute novelty. For this reason, Tones Teatro Natura is an example to be inspired by. The fact that it was created with a perfect mix of resources and has captured the attention and generosity of many companies is a sign that, perhaps even in Italy, the time is ripe for this type of operation. In fact, in recent times, the Tones on the Stones Foundation has been invited several times to worktables in other regions to bring its know-how to this area. We talk about it in the Polytechnics and the ministries and are ready to tell it all over Europe.
If we analyse the common sentiment in the extraction region of TTN, it is evident that the most satisfying result has been the cultural revolution regarding the environmental impact of quarries. Locals have approached a world they considered hostile and distant in the past, and the younger generation has gained an understanding of local history and own intangible heritage.
