Project Description
At T’estim (which means “I love you” in Catalan) we produce infusions. But T'estim is much more. T'estim is a new way of facing the main challenges we face as a society: taking care of our environment, strengthening our mental health, enjoying a healthy diet and proposing a responsible training and job placement model for everyone. In each cup of infusion we taste all these ingredients. As Bauhaus, we approach the concerns of the historical moment and commit ourselves to a better future...

Description of the project
Summary
Our project is called T'estim, which means 'I love you' in Catalan. It is a project based on the principles of Bauhaus with the aim of experimenting with different solutions for social projects and new ways of living. Fundació Estel de Llevant has been working for 27 years to provide necessary support for individuals with mental disorders, enabling them to lead fulfilling lives and pursue their life projects. Similar to the Bauhaus movement, we want to do something different. We don't want to work solely for the mental health of a few individuals; we want to work for the mental health of everyone. And for this, we know it's essential to care for our world. We don't want a decorative project. We want to be functional. We want to be Bauhaus.
Therefore, we have created T'estim, a project to produce organic infusions grown and crafted in Mallorca. It is born with the mission to raise awareness in society and help people.
1. We want to take care of our mental health and thus eliminate all stigmas.
2. We want to protect our environment and rural spaces because we cultivate and consume organic infusions made from Mallorca's botanical richness.
3. We want to support others by creating employment opportunities for people with disabilities.
4. We promote an economy based on local and organic products.
5. We foster an inclusive society that supports individuals diagnosed with mental disorders, promoting emotional well-being for everyone.
6. We educate in values of social and ecological justice.
7. We offer dual vocational training in an inclusive environment, promoting sustainability, mental health, and human development in the economy.
We believe that a better world is possible, and we have put it into practice.

Key objectives for sustainability
Ernst Jahn pondered on how to live in a healthier and more economical way, and T’estim embraces the Bauhaus principles to define sustainability: simplicity, functionality, the use of new forms, and an approach to the concerns of the historical moment. Having good mental health is undoubtedly a "sine qua non" condition to sustain our zest for life over time. We work with the society of Mallorca and the individuals we support to improve everyone's mental health through social awareness, fighting against stigma to ensure equal conditions and rights in their lives. In the last three years, more than 100 individuals have received our support.
Environmental sustainability: caring for and protecting the environment is fundamental to us. We have rehabilitated two abandoned farms to cultivate medicinal plants and produce infusions. We have restored one of the agricultural spaces par excellence in our region, first mentioned in 1269. Our estates hold significant ecological value: they are designated as ANEI (Area Natural de Especial Interés). We have increased the biodiversity of our estate by planting 30 native plant species for experimentation. We cultivate following organic farming standards only. We have reduced water consumption through efficient irrigation systems. We use water from a millennium-old spring called "de na Memoria" and have preserved ethnological heritage of great value. We maintain a circular structure: everything that comes out of the earth can return to it. In our production of infusions, we use only recyclable and compostable materials, avoiding plastics entirely. Lastly, inclusive education and employment are fundamental ingredients: in T’estim, we convey the values of sustainability through vocational training courses. Thanks to all this, we offer an economic alternative to the monoculture of tourism on our island.

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality
The aesthetic experience at T’estim is expressed through gardening and living in natural spaces. We let nature and tradition construct our space. We simply care for it and revive it. We have restored Sa Vall de la Nou (Manacor), an area of cultivation almost a millennium old, mentioned in Arab and medieval documents. Nearly 20 years of abandonment had caused the deterioration of a space designated as ANEI (Area Natural de Especial Interés). Thanks to T’estim, we have rehabilitated it, and now it is a haven of peace. This is how the hundreds of visitors who come to us every year describe it: it facilitates introspection and dialogue among them, and the thousands of plants, pine groves, and riparian vegetation convey the full force of nature in a magical place. We cannot forget the rich ethnological heritage. The millennia-old spring called “de na Memòria” waters the fields. We have restored the old irrigation system, greatly deteriorated by time, thus recovering an ethnological element declared a Cultural Heritage and which has served many generations to irrigate fertile lands. Visitors can admire this jewel of traditional architecture. We want all these wonders to be present in the design of our product: our boxes, website, social media, etc., feature a very careful design that recalls this tradition. Finally, we have recovered plants that were once used for healing and turned them into infusions. We offer our customers the dearest tradition. All of this—the restoration of natural spaces, the valorization of the tradition of consuming medicinal plants, the work of the land by T’estim students and staff—undoubtedly generates a strong sense of belonging to a land, Mallorca, that comes alive every time an infusion is consumed. It is a reminder that Mallorca is also land, tradition, agriculture, nature, well-being and health, tradition, and culture.
Key objectives for inclusion
Walter Gropius said that form follows function. For T’estim, inclusion is fundamental. We adapt processes and educational curricula to the learning abilities of our students. We create inclusive spaces where students and workers at T’estim can co-create governance structures: a shared space to propose ideas and validate content. We want to listen and share. We establish a learning environment where the predominant value is the desire to learn, not the diagnosis. Young people and individuals with disabilities share space and dreams. We facilitate the accessibility of people with disabilities to inclusive spaces and educational initiatives. Both dual training programs and employment opportunities in production areas enable individuals to earn income (minimum wage). This allows them to achieve independent living: housing, coverage of vital needs, financing leisure and free time activities... In essence, they can pursue their life projects. This way, they can share social values and improve their quality of life.
We want to emphasize the promotion of mental health, emotional well-being, and addressing personal needs that we undertake at T’estim. We offer a real alternative to the competitiveness and strictly economic vision of many businesses. For us, the well-being of people is paramount. Our project should grow based on the quality of life it offers. Therefore, several psychologists are dedicated to addressing the mental health needs of individuals. We provide training on mental health, and we address the needs of workers and students (technical support and mediation for economic or housing needs, conflicts within the family or relationship). This is the social function of the project. The form gives it an aesthetic, artisanal, and emotional well-being dimension, with each of the 19 produced infusions.

How Citizens benefit
Like the Breuer chair, T’estim is a comfortable and simple proposal for society as a whole. It is a response to the needs of the people in our region regarding the main challenges we face as a society: mental health, healthy nutrition, economic balance in a tourist island, responsible education, economic circularity against unbridled capitalism, and equity in resource distribution. We offer the citizens of Mallorca an environmentally friendly and socially responsible product with a direct message promoting mental health. We establish a direct connection with our customers through visits and activities at our facilities to promote our values, especially targeting students and social organizations. In 2023, more than 150 people have visited us. We have created the "T’estim movement" with the goal of raising awareness, combating stigma, and promoting circular economy and healthy nutrition. Over 20 volunteers work on the project. We use each infusion as a means of dissemination. Customers who consume our infusions are aware of their value. They can purchase them at around 50 retail points. For all citizens requiring support in mental health matters, we offer the possibility of receiving professional help and understanding from people who have been through similar situations. They can also work or receive training at T’estim. We open the project to young people from Mallorca aged 16 to 30 who wish to receive training and learn more about their own mental health. We have collaboration agreements with 14 municipalities in the region, serving as a reference entity, and manage a project for the Department of Agriculture to research new innovative products. We are partners with APAEMA, Varietats Locals, and CBPAE (organic agriculture) and social economy entities. We collaborate with companies in the sector to jointly create products. The project has won 4 awards, including the Best Organic Product in the Balearic Islands in 2022.

Innovative character
We believe that the greatest innovation presented by T’estim is its ability to propose local solutions to global issues. We emphasize four fundamental aspects. Firstly, it represents a new way to raise awareness about mental health. Offering a healthy, organic, and high-quality product in commercial circuits that includes information about mental health can promote improved social consciousness about mental health and personal self-care. Our social media platforms feature firsthand messages and experiences that aid in reflection. Secondly, we highlight the social entrepreneurship process initiated by our organization. This allows us to create jobs and enhance our funding to reinvest economic benefits into new mental health programs. In our case, we invest in the "What's up" Mental Health project to combat stigma in schools and high schools and the "Des-Integrades" project supporting individuals who have experienced suicidal situations. Thirdly, we generate product innovation. We believe that the botanical richness on our island can be a good starting point for creating new products. We also think that new formats need to be developed to increase the consumption of healthy products. That's why, in collaboration with the University of the Balearic Islands and several independent experts, we have created various hydrosols for flavouring refreshing beverages and herbal powders as a substitute for cocoa powder in plant-based and animal milks. Finally, we want to highlight our dual training courses adapted for people with disabilities, which were pioneers in Spain. Moreover, we have pioneered bringing together young people and individuals with mental disorders in the same educational space and incorporating mental health content into the curriculum. This results in genuine, non-forced social inclusion efforts. Undoubtedly, it has proven to be a highly positive aspect over the years. Over 100 students have participated in this model.
Disciplines/knowledge reflected
Bauhaus brought together various disciplines and technology, revolutionizing the construction world. T’estim follows the same guidelines. We integrate diverse disciplines to ensure the success of the project. All of them are necessary for planning and executing the project.
1) Professionals specializing in psychology, social integration, social work, nursing, etc., have developed processes for caring for individuals. In collaboration with experts in stigma reduction and communication, they have defined messages and actions to integrate into T’estim's marketing processes. We have actively collaborated with the organization "Obertament Catalunya" and the international organization "Time to Change." We have implemented the most innovative methodologies after extensive research across various European countries, such as "Open Dialogue" or person-centered planning processes. We have a job placement area in external companies to provide continuity for the students.
2) Pedagogy experts have designed learning modules for students, adapting the curriculum for individuals with disabilities. Our teaching is based on project-based methodology. Regarding the production area:
3) Experts in biology and botany advise us, defining cultivation methods and environmental care to enhance the richness of our estates. We highlight our collaboration agreement with the Department of Agri-Food Engineering at the University of the Balearic Islands. With them, we conduct a research and innovation process: developing new consumption formats (hydrosols and herbal powders).
4) We collaborate with experts in circular economy to ensure zero impact of our activities on the environment and design business models based on social impact.
5) Marketing and sales experts achieve a high level of sales and economic sustainability.

How stakeholders are engaged
Bauhaus is an anti-academic institution, a pedagogical and experimental center for the arts. T’estim is something similar. We want to break the classical perspective on mental health and the environment. We relate all our activities to the well-being of people. Such a broad perspective allows us to connect with many stakeholders and amplify our impact.
We offer young people in the Manacor region (14 municipalities) the opportunity to receive a one-year education in agriculture and gardening and obtain an official qualification. At the same time, we provide them with paid employment. We offer people with disabilities the same training, but in two years, adapting the curriculum in an inclusive environment. Their families participate in the courses, and they are instilled with the values of health and sustainability. The family unit sees an increase in their income. T’estim customers (220 direct and thousands of end consumers) become aware of the project's values through the consumption of our products. Currently, we distribute our products throughout the island of Mallorca. Additionally, 15 people work directly or indirectly in this project. We offer professionals in Mallorca the opportunity to work in an innovative project with high social esteem. Five of them have disabilities (plus 30 contracted students). We focus on innovation. That's why we collaborate with the University of the Balearic Islands in researching and designing new products, and with various scientists specialized in biology and botany. We are part of two prominent entities in organic agriculture: the Regulatory Council for Organic Agriculture in the Balearic Islands and the Association of Organic Producers. Annually, we organize volunteer activities open to the local community to learn about the project and share our vision. We promote their well-being. Finally, each year, we run awareness campaigns on social media, TV, and radio to convey our values.

Global challenges
T’estim focuses on the four main challenges we face globally: climate change, excessive consumption of harmful foods, exponential increase in mental disorders, and extremely low employment rates among individuals with mental disorders and young people. We believe T’estim provides local solutions to these global problems.
In the Mediterranean, global warming is particularly severe. The Mediterranean region is warming 20% faster than the global average.
1) Climate change is causing increased drought and temperature rises, which are already close to the limit set by the WHO of 1.5 degrees. Preserving our environment, regenerating abandoned natural and agricultural spaces, and promoting crops adapted to climate change are ways we can contribute to improving the planet.
2) The recent COVID pandemic has led to a severe increase in mental disorders and suicide attempts across Europe and also in Mallorca. Our extensive experience in this field allows us to implement innovative actions that heal individuals and combat stigma. We aim to enter every household's kitchens to convey our message. T’estim's infusions and products enable us to do so.
3) Employment rates for individuals with severe mental disorders are among the lowest. Only 17.1% of them are employed. Similarly, the youth employment rate is one of the lowest in Europe, at 26% (INE 2020 data). Creating social and educational entrepreneurship projects with innovative methodologies like dual training can locally increase these rates.
4) Sixteen percent of the European adult population is obese, and 30% of children are obese. The consumption of industrial food is increasing every day. The Mediterranean diet, a UNESCO World Heritage, is a healthy alternative, and the consumption of medicinal and aromatic plants is also beneficial.
5) Providing a salary facilitates access to housing. Currently, in Spain, there are 11,000 homeless people. Between 20% and 52% of them have a mental disorder.

Learning transferred to other parties
T’estim project is perfectly replicable, both at the project level itself in various territories and among different user groups, taking into account the territorial and cultural biodiversity. Conceptually, it is replicable since it is easy to identify the social problems it aims to address. The issue of mental health is increasing in the global population, and it has been identified as one of the main causes of disability by the World Health Organization (WHO) for 2030.
The strategy of "thinking globally and acting locally" allows the design of strategies that impact the local expression of problems faced across Europe. In each region, these strategies will need adjustments and perhaps require designing different expressions, but fundamentally, they should serve to address global problems. In Spain specifically, due to its geographical characteristics, environmental issues are becoming more significant. Therefore, projects that regenerate spaces and utilize existing resources, like T'estim, are 100% replicable, considering the uniqueness of each territory.
Regarding specific actions related to mental health, employment integration, training, and the consumption of healthy and responsible products, these are perfectly reproducible and adaptable to the reality of each territory. The training of individuals at risk of social exclusion and/or vulnerability are key factors in overcoming these situations, providing them with tools to become active agents in society.
Additionally, we understand that the production of a specific product is not essential in the project's design. Instead, it serves as a means to convey the underlying message. The adoption of innovative methodologies is crucial for the project's success. Therefore, we believe it is necessary to create communication and collaboration networks among similar projects at UE. These networks would facilitate knowledge sharing, replication, and joint efforts towards sustainability and optimizing outcomes.
