Description of the project

Summary

KARMA CLIMA is a multi-layer project produced by Marlene Kuntz (MK) with three key objectives:

1. Bring to front the discussion about climate change, its impact and the ways to mitigate/adapt to it and start concrete individual and collective actions through the dialogue with Artists and the direct interaction with their creative process
2. Establish an effective alliance between Artists, Community Cooperatives, Organizations and Institutions in order to improve the challenging rural-urban relationship and to support a sustainable contemporary development of rural areas
3. Design and prototype a new business model in which Music can find a new dimension within a broader ecosystem (Science, Culture, Technology, Society) and it can play as trigger for territorial development, social and economic growth

The project is much bigger than an album and it includes Artist Residences, Music production, Tour but also the creation of professional and experiential workshops. It is communities that have given rise to significant redevelopment models of internal national areas, taking into account the territorial origins of the band, the province of Cuneo and three strategic rural locations: Ostana, Paraloup and Piozzo.
The project aimed to implement actions capable of overcoming the limits imposed by Covid-19, and to experiment with a format which could open up cooperation and the development of sustainable models.

KARMA CLIMA workshops were based on the enhancement of local material and immaterial culture by connecting local knowledge to a national dimension.
The concept of the project is linked to the idea of "sustainable connection" with a physical dimension - the work of the band in the territories and of all those active in laboratories - and with the digital platform, which had the task of channeling energy, planning, economic and mental resources to positively impact on communities, starting from the enhancement of individual and collective skills.

Key objectives for sustainability

KARMA CLIMA talked about the environment and even more because of this, it was designed to guarantee the maxim of sustainability. The creative part of the project took place in the rural areas of Ostana, Paraloup and Piozzo and it produced the minimum impact possible. Recording studios and outdoor events had a low impact in terms of energy consumption. In concerts plastic bottles were not used, recycled materials were preferred for the setting up and compostable packaging for food. Concerning mobility, only bikes and electric vehicles were used. The project was launched on June 5th at the opening of CinemAmbiente on occasion of the World Day for Environment, together with UNEP and UN Mountain.

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

KARMA CLIMA is first of all an artistic project and, starting from Music, it involves different Artists and glances in designing a new aesthetic in open dialogue with the environment and the landscape. Mountains, animals, the red color of autumn on trees, the morning fog covering Monviso's peak, but also the scarcity of water, the beautiful but completely anomalous hot and sunshine in winter months… all became elements of inspiration, reflection and discussion about individual and collective responsibility, creating the ground for the new KARMA CLIMA lyrics and music.

During MK’s residency, the Artist Moira Franco opened an important dialogue with the musicians, she traced the first sketches and took the photographs of the faces of Cristiano Godano, Luca Lagash, Riccardo Tesio, Davide Arneodo and Sergio Carnevale. This exchange has generated five large portraits, made with bic pens, in which the musicians emerge from the water, like imposing icebergs, accompanied by their "animal guide" and their multiple artistic perspectives.

KARMA CLIMA was entirely documented through the shots of the photographer Michele Piazza. He investigated in depth not only the Musicians in the moment of their creative act, but also all the individuals who have had the opportunity to confront, dialogue, share problems and solutions with them regarding the impact generated by climate change in progress.

Since the very beginning of the project, the film director Lorenzo Letizia shot its film, investigating the "impossible" experience of perceiving time from intimate moments of languages’ combination during the creation of a work. It is the vision and contemplation of people and places, a visual and musical drama made of rhythms and dissonances, intensities and heights, in an encounter with the critical thinking of the spectator, crossed by the possibilities of cinema, theater, music, and by the practices and knowledge of video installations and new digital technologies.

Key objectives for inclusion

KARMA CLIMA considered inclusion as a main element in all the actions it proposed. For example, within the project new “living books” have been added to the Living Library of the Alps by Laura Cantarella and Angela Nasso. Inspired by the Human Libraries born in northern Europe and now spread all over the world, the format encourages intercultural and transgenerational dialogue, as well as the sharing of the intangible heritage of a community.
During KARMA CLIMA Residences, share its process to build a constellation of communities, knowledge, relationships and exchanges. Recorded new books have been made available for public consultations and a meeting with the Artists was organized to allow them to “read” the new stories and get inspiration for their work.
Many experiences have been organized within the project in order to meet and exchange with shepherds, farmers, artisans, explorers, park guides, local producers, public administrators. Recreation and reading activities have been offered to children in libraries, luthiers. Sound experts sonorized the spaces where Artists were guests of, the writers and artists residing in the communities.

How Citizens benefit

KARMA CLIMA was explicitly a project in which Artists proposed to co-design artworks in open dialogue with civil society.
This happened in Ostana, at about 1,300 meters above sea level with a privileged view of the Monviso. The village, which at the beginning of the XX century had about 1200 inhabitants, like many other mountain villages, has seen an almost complete depopulation in the 80s. Today, Ostana is an example of territorial rebirth and a social laboratory, based on the enhancement of Alpine architecture, of the local culture - which historically includes the Occitan matrix, and of young people. It is the only Italian Municipality selected, among 15 throughout Europe, as pilot case in the Smart Rural platform. Viso A Viso, Community Cooperative manages here today all public assets and proposes a new business model based on culture, which includes OSTANA RES the specific action of its smart strategy, presented in 2020 to the EU Commission, within which the project KARMA CLIMA took place and shape.
The experience has then continued in Paraloup, "sheltered from wolves" in Occitan, an alpine village located at 1360m in the municipality of Rittana in Valle Stura. The Borgata has welcomed shepherds and flocks for centuries and, during the Resistance, it was a place of transformation for about 200 twenty-year-olds who, peasant parties, students, artisans from all over Italy, transformed here into partisans and are who went down to the valley to fight for the liberation of Italy from Nazi-fascism, including Duccio Galimberti, Dante Livio Bianco, Giorgio Bocca and Nuto Revelli.
And it found a strategic third place in Piozzo, where Teo Muso has created the famous brand Baladin and, also through music (thousands of concerts took place in its circus headquarters) has been able to spread from a local dimension to an international one.
All artistic events after the Artistic Residences moved in the same direction: talk, think, learn and improve with people.

Physical or other transformations

It refers to other types of transformations (soft investment)

Innovative character

A technological platform was designed to reach online public with blog and sharing. Today it is under further development on the international level.
The platform is being developed by using open-source softwares.
It is meant to (1) store and share case studies, data and useful info, existing and generated music city formats, reports and analysis; (2) preserve and enhance the network created among and within the different locations and offer the possibility for collaborative actions. Content will be in EN and national languages and the platform will provide code for screen readers as well as tools for translating content into sign language; (3) provide Music Managers, Agents, Professionals, Artists, Policy Makers and Stakeholders with key-learnings and tools and it will make available new tested tools to nourish and implement the new music ecosystem of their locations; (4) be a digital observatory with a specific focus on environmental, cultural, social and economic sustainability of the new artistic projects and business models in the music field; (5) activate a series of channels to get in touch with industry professionals in the production and distribution fields.
The platform is also a strategic showcase to promote project outputs’ scalability and it represents a way for locations to showcase themselves to new and wider European audiences. It will host an editorial format made up of multimedia and transmedia content, which will make the platform a real place with its own community. Brand journalism is used to raise awareness and to connect music with the emergency for climate, the reduction of emissions in everyday life, and to push the call for cooperation and collective participation in urgent issues. The editorial part also includes video and audio content to explore the issues at stake, involving both the experts and the protagonists from both the scientific and the cultural fields.

Disciplines/knowledge reflected

The project created the opportunity to move across many different sectors and to mix and connect them as activities were conceived within a unique innovative ecosystem.
Music and Sound Engineering had to go hand in hand to setup and engineer mobile recording studios in rural areas facing rather high complexity and find innovative solutions also to manage outdoor locations in mountain areas. Technological developers have been also involved to implement KARMA CLIMA platform.
Since the very beginning of the project, Music called into action also Cinema, Photo and Visual arts to interpret scientific data and turn them into immediate and emotional languages which could reach the largest audience and transfer knowledge about climate change. To make it even more solid, a strict collaboration was established with Universities to share data from their scientific research concerning rivers, glaciers and animals. Actually, in Ostana a specific inter-University research team called Alpstream is continuously monitoring the River Po’s status and making a predicting analysis to mitigate climate change’s impact both in mountain and cities.

The project considered sustainable mobility as a relevant asset and it involved well known testimonials such as the ultrarunner Oliviero Alotto which accompanied artists and people in the rides from Turin to Ostana and to Paraloup and Piozzo. Sport represented also a relevant communication channel.
Finally, also food and beverage played a role in the project, particularly in relation to sustainable production’s practices, environmental-aware-ethic-choices, and health. Coffee by Oliviero Alotto’s company, honey by Volavia and beer by Baladin entered - together with T-shirts and bags - in the KARMA CLIMA emporium.

Methodology used

KARMA CLIMA adopted co-planning, connection and networking as main methodologies to reach project goals.
Co-planning with the Community Cooperatives, Foundations, public and private stakeholders makes it possible for the project to find, dialogue and search together for possible answers to the energy, environmental and economic crisis, aggravated by the ongoing wars, to imagine concrete and useful paths in support of the social fabric and cooperation between people and between people and territories. In particular, the comparison with the Energy Communities will allow us to know and then share models and tools at the basis of a co-participated and more sustainable territorial development.

The project is based on the idea of "connection" and declined in two dimensions:
- physical dimension – the work of the band in the territories and of all those who wish to participate in the workshops at the same time
- virtual dimension - the digital platform will have the function of channeling energies, projects, proposed by the Energy Communities, bringing individual and collective skills to the fore

Culture, science and tourism find in this project a necessary synthesis that starts from the enhancement of the material and immaterial culture of the territory to arrive at experiences that can be lived by the guest. For this reason, the construction of relationships with the tourism, culture, science and economy sectors is fundamental in the design of KARMA CLIMA.
The objective of this action will be the partnership with the Tourism Companies of the various areas of residence, and the identification of strategic partners for the connection of the identified territory with subjects of national and international importance who will act as a sounding board for the project and they will make it possible to spread the value of the initiatives as well as to make the local community grow.

How stakeholders are engaged

KARMA CLIMA was a relevant project as it opened collaboration with many different public and private stakeholders and at the same time it addressed many different targets, from children to adults, from entrepreneurs to MK fans, from artists to environment’s sentinelles. Particularly, it proposed:
- workshops with the Cinema Museum, CinemAmbiente, the Fitzcarraldo Foundation, Tones on The Stones Foundation, Unioncamere Piemonte, ConfCooperative, Horcynus Orca Foundation, Happennino Festival, Risorgimarche festival, Living memory Festival, Trento Film Festival, MUSE Science museum, Climate Social Camp Turin, UNEP, UN Mountain.
- meetings with community cooperatives, businesses and artists, interest groups such as Friday for Future
- Sartoria Musicale, an educational format in collaboration with the Museo del Cinema, for children to produce soundtracks and think about climate change
- special Experiences with video+music live performances which opened a direct talk with the public about climate change / impact
- bike tours were organized to keep mobility impact the lowest but at the same time to involve, together with Artists, local communities, sportives, bike fans and to connect this dimension with the cultural one
- special formats with the University of Turin at the Mole Antonelliana to mix science and research about climate change with art and more easily transfer knowledge to people
- sustainable products (honey, coffee, beer, etc) have started been produced within KARMA CLIMA to make the artistic message event more concrete and to disseminate stories of inclusion, accessibility and climate adaptation at the national level
- main concerts have been made outdoor, in mountain fields and with reduced ticketing in order to include the largest audiences

Global challenges

The wonderful villages of Italy, which cover about 60% of the national territory, appear to be the places appointed for the creation of laboratories that are not only for comparison, but even before that as an alternative to the single urban model, which has absorbed in recent decades all energy and production resources, and demonstrated all its shortcomings even before the pandemic.
The possibility to observe, live and discuss climate change’s impact at the local level, especially in the Alps, in little villages like Ostana, Paraloup and Piozzo allowed Artists, Scientists, Citizens together to assess the situation in pilot areas. The national level in which KARMA CLIMA brought and shared all its products created the condition to enlarge the sharing.

The laboratories and the redevelopment of the rural areas, themes already supported by authoritative interlocutors such as Mario Cucinella, Stefano Boeri, Fabrizio Barca, Alessandro Melis, Carlo Ratti to name a few, and explored in depth by institutional exhibitions such as the International Architecture Exhibition Biennale di Venezia 2018, the National Strategy for Internal Areas, the Brocken Nature Triennale Exhibition in Milan 2019, the project of the new scientific center of the University of Milan and the upcoming International Architecture Exhibition Biennale di Venezia 2021 whose The Italian Pavilion has been entrusted to the care of Alessandro Melis.
The possibility to collaborate with UNEP, UN Mountains and Friday for Futures spilled KARMA CLIMA on the international level.

Learning transferred to other parties

KARMA KLIMA was designed from the very beginning to be a modular, replicable cultural experience and business model. All its actions, formats, events, products will constitute a pilot case to inspire other music bands and stakeholders in the different fields to derive successful new cultural products.
Matured and tested methodology, technology, processes, products, and learnings are going to be shared in the digital platform.

KARMA CLIMA was included in the Symbola Report 2022 "I am Culture" (presented in Rome at the Maxxi by the President of the Ermete Foundation Realacci and by the president of Unioncamere Andrea Prete), in the chapter "The cultural innovation to come", as a successful case history, an emblematic example of the process which - reads on p.52 of the Report - "must lead cultural institutions to change, at least in part, their positioning and ability to dialogue with other players in the supply chain and other production sectors… It is certainly not instantaneous and requires constancy and continuity of experimentation, before reaching a critical mass sufficient to support long-term development prospects. But some ongoing experiences show not only how it is possible, but also how it is desirable. The project represents a wide-ranging experience that is only the beginning of a longer journey, halfway between a live event and an active dialogue for the development of areas that can no longer be defined as "marginal", but rather as laboratories with a high potential for innovation. It is difficult for KARMA CLIMA to use the live music / recorded music dichotomy, since the whole project takes on a different form, not only hybrid, but constantly co-participated and composed of a swarm of scientific and cultural products, live and digital, merged and harmonized in a new language capable of describing what innovation is today”.
