Regaining a sense of belonging
Project Description
Through this endeavor, our objective is to shed light on the authoritarian history of our nation using art as a tool. We aspire to instigate public discourse regarding the collective trauma that has permeated our society since that era. To realize this, we have gathered podcasts and immortalize the faces of 49 former political detainees from Spaç prison through sculptures. Furthermore, we have conducted research, exhibition, public dialogues, and produced a short film for this matter.

Description of the project
Summary
The genesis of this project started in 2022 during our visit to the vicinity of the former Spaçi prison. At present, this prison, despite its grim historical significance in Albania, remains in a state of abandonment, bereft of care or attention. The custodianship of this facility now falls to a local resident who serves on a voluntary basis. Despite its deteriorating physical condition, it still receives an annual influx of 2,500 visitors. Our project has successfully rendered the likenesses of 49 former inmates in the medium of sculpture while also documenting their narratives. These portraits and podcasts will be bequeathed to the prison, thereby affording the opportunity for visiting tourists to directly acquaint themselves with the agonizing experiences endured by those who once languished within its confines.
The podcasts are accessible on our website. Through this platform, we organized an open competition for scriptwriting aimed at the production of a short film. A distinguished panel of experts, including a screenwriter with personal experience of the authoritarian regime, a filmmaker renowned for works on the same topic, and a former inmate of Spaç, collectively appraised the submissions and selected the most outstanding script.
The film featured a cast of 20 young individuals, all of whom gained a deeper understanding of our nation's dictatorial history.
We have also organized two four-day workshops encompassing various themes, including 'Ceramic Painting,' 'Utilizing History & Culture as a Catalyst for Togetherness,' and inclusive public discussions, with the active engagement of a diverse audience comprising 200 participants.
This project reinstated the sense of belonging among former prisoners, who had been overlooked for 32 years. It prompted local and national authorities to recognize the importance of local historical heritage. Additionally, through the medium of art and culture, we effectively boosted visitor numbers to this former prison.

Key objectives for sustainability
The activities organized within the framework of the project developed the skills of young people in craft production, which they would use for future economic development. In the workshops held, young people, including marginalized groups, gained valuable analytical skills regarding the dark past of communism in Albania and the importance of good governance and politics for the future, which are essential for a democratic society. The project supported youth in engaging in economic development by providing them with the means to start online businesses. The youth who participated in the workshops also volunteered for the organization, and they continued to be part of the activities even after the project concluded.
The sculptures and portraits of former political prisoners were donated to the Spaç Prison cultural site, adding value and attracting more tourists. This had a positive effect after the project's completion, requiring no further involvement from the organization or other entities. we are on the way conducting a market research for possible selling points for the materials created during the workshops with youth in Tirana and with women in Rreshen, such as wool puppets, souvenirs, and candles. The short movie produced within the project will be used as an awareness-raising and lobbying tool in various activities with policymakers and decision-makers regarding Albania's communist past and future cultural development.
On a broader level, Tek Bunkeri continued to work toward sustainable, functioning, and efficient interventions in the areas of its expertise, including opportunities for lasting solutions.
Tek Bunkeri has also convened official meetings with the Ministry of Culture, the Institute of the Politically Persecuted, the Authority of Files, the Municipality of Rreshen, public and local universities, as well as various media outlets. These connections are poised to be maintained for future endeavors of a similar nature.

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality
The sculpture creation process proved to be particularly challenging, involving the application of 'Alginate' material to make live-casting to individuals aged over 70 years. Initially, we harbored reservations about the participation of the elderly ex-prisoners in Spaç, considering their advanced age and frequent health issues. Fortunately, our idea was warmly embraced by them, and we were able to surpass our initial expectations. Throughout the entire process, which encompassed the podcast series, they expressed great satisfaction that we, as young individuals, effectively became their voice after 32 years of living under a democratic regime.
Through this artistic intervention, their visage and voices shall perpetually endure within the confines of the Spaç Prison, ensuring that successive generations may draw invaluable insights from this enduring work of art. Hence, this intervention has a significant impact not only on the surviving former political prisoners but also on their families and the broader society at large.
In addition, spanning across the realms of painting to ceramics, the youth express a high degree of contentment with the artistic output. Approximately 20 pieces of artwork have been created, all of which exhibit a commendable level of artistic excellence.
Furthermore, the film currently undergoing the editing phase has undergone a remarkable evolution. Originally conceived as an 8-minute short film featuring the participation of seven young individuals, it has expanded into a 15-minute production involving the engagement of nineteen young participants.
As evident from the preceding descriptions, this project has surpassed all of our initial expectations regarding its impact. Therefore, it is fair to assert that this initiative has resonated deeply with a considerable number of individuals who have actively embraced it.

Key objectives for inclusion
The primary objectives of our project in terms of inclusion were to address historical injustices and ensure the equitable treatment and recognition of the most significant minority group to have emerged from the legacy of the Albanian dictatorship and society over the past 79 years, spanning 48 years of dictatorship and 31 years of "Political Pluralism." Over the course of the preceding three decades, it became evident that former political victims had been deprived of the justice they rightfully deserved, and their protracted suffering had gone underrecognized. Moreover, their voices had been largely marginalized within Albanian society and civil circles.
This project played a crucial role in not only granting each former political prisoner in Spaç the due recognition and recompense they were owed but also in catalyzing a broader and more substantial public discourse on this deeply significant issue within our society. By prioritizing the inclusion of women as experts and actively promoting workplace participation from underrepresented groups, including members of the Roma and Egyptian communities, individuals with diverse abilities, and those from the LGBTI+ community, the project demonstrated a strong commitment to fostering diversity, gender equity, and social inclusion.
Our collaboration with artists from various domains of the arts, such as painters, sculptors, directors, dancers, choreographers, film editors, and scenographers, highlighted the economic challenges often faced by this creative community, especially in terms of support from Albanian institutions. This underscored the
project's dedication to addressing economic support for artists and recognizing their role in enriching the cultural fabric of our society.
Our project is a model of inclusivity, encompassing both the historical redressal of injustices and a multifaceted approach to diversity, gender equity, social inclusion,
while underscoring the importance of supporting arts and artists.

How Citizens benefit
The involvement of citizens, civil society, and various institutions has been instrumental in shaping and elevating the project. It commenced with a meticulous process to identify former political prisoners in Spaç, where civil society actors played a role in recognizing individuals with a history of political persecution and identifying relevant state institutions responsible for addressing these issues.
Tek Bunkeri initiated collaboration with governmental bodies, including the "Authority of Files," the "Institution for Crimes and the Consequences of Communism," and the "Institution of the Politically Persecuted." These institutions not only provided crucial cooperation but also allowed the realization of portrait sessions within their premises, and assisted in establishing direct contact with former political prisoners.
The project established a close partnership with the "Citizens Channel" media to ensure comprehensive media coverage throughout the entire project. Simultaneously, it engaged in a fruitful collaboration with the informal dance group "Was bleibt kollektiv | Gentian Doda," particularly in developing the experimental short film.
Additionally, the project has forged robust partnerships with both public and private universities, which are actively engaging their students in promoting the exhibition. In this joint effort, each university has appointed a coordinator responsible for overseeing logistical aspects related to the visit to Spaç Prison, further broadening the project's reach.
Furthermore, a cooperative relationship has been established with the local municipality in the vicinity of the former prison. This municipality will assume responsibility for managing the exhibition in the near future.
The collective involvement of citizens, civil society, state institutions, media organizations, artistic groups, and educational institutions underscores the project's commitment to inclusivity, historical accuracy, and broad societal engagement.

Innovative character
The project as a whole can be considered highly innovative due to its unique approach, as evidenced by the absence of similar initiatives both locally and internationally, according to our research findings. This novelty characterizes the entire project. Furthermore, the project's development involved the establishment of partnerships with local and central institutions, civil society organizations, artists from diverse disciplines, universities, and marginalized communities. The extensive scope of inclusion in this project represents an innovation within the Albanian context.
Furthermore, this project is driven by the aspiration and the potential for expansion to encompass additional former inmates from Spaç. It serves as a pilot endeavor, offering a template that can be adopted for addressing political prisons constructed during the dictatorial regime. Such an approach could serve as a noteworthy precedent that merits consideration not only by other European nations but also on a broader international scale, especially those who have grappled with the legacy of authoritarian regimes. The project's framework has been thoughtfully designed with adaptability at its core, ensuring its flexibility for implementation in diverse settings or with varying groups.
Moreover, this project diligently upholds the fundamental principles of human rights and extends its protective embrace over those who have suffered past persecution, concurrently fostering heightened awareness among the youth through innovative and creative means. Through this deliberate approach, we actively contribute to the cultivation of a robust, healthful, and democratic societal framework.

Methodology used
Since its inception, this project was conceived through a comprehensive assessment of the societal needs within Albania, where the evident social traumas left by the dictatorship are conspicuous. These include issues such as the pervasive inferiority complex, deep-seated mistrust among individuals, the concept of an "external enemy," and a prevailing fear of engaging in protest. It is our firm belief that addressing these traumas can only be achieved through a profound and open dialogue about the past.
Upon completion of the needs assessment, the individuals involved in establishing direct connections with former political prisoners at Spaç were systematically identified. Concurrently, dialogues were initiated with relevant institutions specializing in matters concerning former political prisoners. Subsequently, as the project crystallized, outreach efforts commenced to engage prospective stakeholders who would partake in the exhibition.
To facilitate the development of the film script, a multifaceted approach was adopted, encompassing outreach via social media platforms and direct interactions with emerging writers. Furthermore, an exhaustive online search was conducted to pinpoint suitable candidates for the jury responsible for selecting the best script.
In addition, to facilitate the realization of the workshops, a mechanism for open calls for participants was instituted. To extend the reach to marginalized communities, direct communication with partner organizations specializing in this domain was established.
To get maximal visibility, we meticulously disseminated each facet of the project through various online channels, including but not limited to, the utilization of posters, photographs, live video broadcasts, and reels. As a result of these concerted efforts, we were able to attain a substantial level of exposure, reaching an impressive audience of precisely 34,939 individuals on social media platforms throughout the entire duration of this project.

Learning transferred to other parties
The nature of the project lends itself to potential replication within various contexts or locations. The project's initial phase readily facilitates its extension to additional political prison sites within Albania. The historical backdrop in Albania alone underscores the gravity of the situation, with 34,135 individuals having endured imprisonment on the grounds of dissenting political views. As such, a systematic exploration can be undertaken to identify and engage further survivors from the aforementioned statistics, offering a broader scope for project replication.
The foundation of our short film hinges on the testimonies and confessions of 49 former political prisoners, gathered and documented. This methodology affords a clear pathway for replication, whereby the collection of survivor narratives can be adopted in analogous circumstances.
Regarding the artistic components and related processes, it is essential to emphasize that these aspects are expertly orchestrated by artists and the implementing organization. Consequently, the artistic dimension and related facets remain a well-structured process, devoid of foreseeable impediments, thus ensuring a consistent and successful execution of the project's creativity.
The need for similar initiatives extends to nations with complex political histories, where the scars of political imprisonment continue to haunt societies. By adopting a model akin to the one outlined in this project, the quest for justice and truth can be extended to other countries and regions where the plight of political prisoners remains unresolved.
This process lends itself to facile replication in other nations that have grappled with the legacy of political imprisonment, wherein former prisoners are still in pursuit of justice. The historical prevalence of political prisons transcends national boundaries and finds resonance in numerous countries around the world, each bespeaking its own unique narrative of injustice and oppression.
