Description of the project

Summary

Greece's biggest island, Crete, is home to almost seven hundred thousand residents. It is located at the sea crossroad of three continents, with its proximity to the rest of the country's mainland and to the rest of Europe being quite difficult in terms of every day life.

People and especially children often lack the chance to be able to explore other beautiful places and experience the richness that lies in all the different natural and cultural sites that are out of easy reach. This can create a feeling of cut off among the local community and leads also to a lack of knowledge and appreciation for our shared European heritage.

In this context, a group of people came up with an idea in 2021 to address this issue. They decided to introduce a new way of discovering more about our continent and the rest of the world. Founded in 2022, The Children's World Lounge opened its doors in Crete, as a new educational and entertainment Center dedicated to offering a wide range of interdisciplinary acitivities that aim to foster knowledge about our world's nature and diferrent cultures.

With a mission to help children and youth learn more about our planet, the iniative seeks to empower them in their aspiration of creating for themselves and for the following generations a better world, where the values of peace, friendship and solidarity are embraced. The programmes are designed to present and host acitivities that showcase our planet’s natural environment, its habitats, the amazing landscapes from around the world and also give children the opportunity to learn more about the peoples, their histories and their cultural heritage from all around Europe and the world.

The Children's World Lounge has gained a warm welcome in its first year of operations by 600 children, nearly 100 parents and 55 educators that participated in its programmes and has become the children's local fun and knowledge hub about our continent and the rest of the world.

Key objectives for sustainability

The Children's World Lounge is an innovative iniative that has a clear mission to help children learn more, like more and care more about our blue planet.

In this context, the iniative's objectives, the designed programmes with the activities taking place, its curriculum, its content and its people are dedicated to foster knowledge about the beauty that exists in our planet. We are all about life in land, life underwater, the importance of our planet's climate, the importance of the atmosphere and the preservation of a rich biodiversity with the necessary balance in all ecosystems and their surrounding living creatures and organisms.

We fully support the sustainable development goals by the United Nations and we incorporated activities in our programmes that raised awareness among children and promoted climate action among the local community.

We believe that, when you know more and start to care more about our planet then you can better protect it and by working with children and cultivating with them a positive mindset for our planet's beauty and importance of protection, we strive to contribute in both directions.

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

The Children's Wolrd Lounge introduces an innovative concept space dedicated to nature and culture, in the heart of the urban environment of Heraklion in Crete.

We chose to use the themes of playing and fun to the activities we offer. Playing is the natural and most comfortable way of being for children. It contributes to their physical and mental euphoria, positively determines their development and their well being and this approach underlines all our programmes.
The interior design also using colourful elements creates an inviting atmosphere for everyone and the layout includes a parents's lounge and a living room hall named ' Jules Verne ' where the games stories and activities about the world take place.

Children have fun and share pleasant moments playing and learning all about our planet. The activities take them on a journey of knowledge about our world as they uncover the beauty of our wonderful planet focusing on:

Our Cultures
Symbols, traditions, sites, landmarks and human achievements. Arts and writings, myths and fascinating stories that shape the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of peoples from all parts of the world.

Our natural environment
Earth’s nature and its different ecosystems and biomes. All the wonderful landscapes from the 7 continents. Flaura and fauna. All countries and their mega cities along with remote areas from around the globe and their unique features.

Life in our world today
Τhe urban and rural lifestyle and the way of everyday life of people in different parts of the planet. Live sessions from around the world. Meaningful stories to share, news events and happenings of today.

The Children's Wolrd Lounge puts a smile on everyone's face because it can reach children and make them feel that they are part of our planet. By engaging with its curated activities and being part of its programmes children truly gain the sence of belonging within our world.

Key objectives for inclusion

The value of learning more about our world is an inclusive endeavor and a right of every child. This is our mission at The Children's World Lounge.

To offer to many children a hub of fun and knowledge about the world's nature and culture, housed in a modern, inviting and inclusive environment for all.

Together we nurture and help grow a pleasant and positive interest, new to many children. Through our activities, children are endowed with the sense of being confident on their knowledge and appreciation about our world and this feeling is something that every child deserves to experience.

All of our programmes promote our underlying values of friendship, collaboration and participation so that we create an open and inclusive spirit of engagement for every child that is welcomed to be a part of our community.

At the same time we have designed a wide range of programmmes with different formats of engagement for the public. In this way we are able to reach more people in the local community in terms of price range of the offered activities and timing schedules within the daily routines of families with children.

Our series of programmes :

1) ' Our world through play ' is an annual 18- week or 36 - week long programme about our planet's nature and different cultures.

2) ' World Highlights, Nature & Culture ' is a series of different thematic monthly activities during weekends.

3) ' Our blue planet' is our educational and entertainment activity programme for kindergarten school groups that visit us.

4) ' Becoming friends with the environment around us '
our programme for primary school groups that visit us.

5) ' Becoming friends with the world '
our programme for secondary school groups.

At the same time we have partnered with educators and offered free of charge activities for various school groups in areas within the region of Crete for people that reside their and face major social and economic challenges.

Results in relation to category

The Children's World Lounge opened its doors to the public in September 2022 as a new cultural educational and entertainment Center for children and youth.

The main qualitative results through our first year of operations :

Very positive perception by the vast majority of the public for the value of our iniative. Very good remarks for our idea and for the necessity of our scope, mainly because, according to parents, there is little emphasis given to similar programmes by formal educational platforms in schools.

Very good remarks about the content of our programmes and our method, very positive level of interest indicated by children that took part in our activities accross all offered formats.

The quantitative results through our first year of operations :

600 children, 90 parents and 55 educators participated in our programmes from the start of September 2022 to the end of July 2023.

Also, 350 children and 40 educators have participated in our programmes the first two months within our second year of operations between the months of September to November 2023, making us forecast an estimated total figure of around 1.500 children to be likely to visit The Children's World Lounge during the 2023 2024 season of operations.

How Citizens benefit

The Children's World Lounge is a hub for all children living in Crete who wish to learn more about our world's nature and culture.

Children taking part in our programmes share playful moments of interactive learning activities. Ranging from drawing and painting thematic world maps of the earth's biomes and climate zones to understanding where the biodiversity in nature thrives today around our planet. From using digital satellite apps like Copernicus space data for earth exploration and observation to discovering more things about protected geoparks and each different habitat by watching documentaries about the earth's flaura and fauna and by recognizing different physical landscapes from all the continents.
We also host sessions with guest scientists from all around the world that connect wit us through video call technologies and discuss with children about interesting topics of their expertise like astronomists, geographers geologists, marine biologists, environmental professionals and other nature explorers.

Our other realm of interest at The Children's World Lounge is culture and cultural heritage. Through our activities children are engaging with elements from arts and writings from all around the world. From recognizing sites of cultural importance and UNESCO designated world heritage sites to discovering and appreciating many elements of intangible culture like the paintings of Hilma af Klint or Le Corbusier's idea to' lift houses from the ground ' and from Debussy's nocturnes to Don Quixote and the everlasting value of the Parthenon or the music compositions of Beethoven.

All these elements of cultural heritage are at the heart of our curated activities along with hosting live online sessions around the world, with artists and other culture enthousiasts. Guest speakers in these sessions talk to us about culture in their places through their percepctives and also share with us how modern life looks like in their place today.

Innovative character

The Children's World Lounge can be considered as an innovative iniative both in its conception of creating a children' hub about Europe and the rest of the world and also in introducing an original and comprehensive methodology of presenting its curated programmes.

According to the latest census conducted in Greece in 2021 by the Hellenic Statistical Authority, there is a general population of 624.408 people living on the island of Crete. Among them, there is a total of more than 60.000 children in the age between newborns to 9 years old and more than 67.000 children and youth in the age between 10 to 19. We took this finding as an
evidence of a significant amount of children living on the island that could be engaged with our programmes.

At the same time we conducted primary research in the public accounts of Greece's business registry, in relevant local chambers of commerce and similar web and social media relevant researches to see whether there were any similar providers to our programmes. Until the day of our registry in June 2022 and even up until the end of summer of 2023, there were no other similar cultural or other entertainment Centers for children with a clear focus, to provide programmes with activities about our world's nature and culture. We took this finding as a safe conclusion that such an initative was missing from Crete and as an indication of the innovative character of our idea.

Disciplines/knowledge reflected

At The Children's World Lounge we are a diverse team of professionals who all share the same care for children and passion for nature and culture. The governing team of The Children's World Lounge consists of a marketing professional, a physicist, a mathematician, a painter and engraver and an entrepreneur.

With a global citizenship mindset and having travelled, worked and lived in many and different places around the world, we all shared the same feeling of concent about the necessity of our endeavor. When we realized that such a concept does not exist and that it can truly bring value to the well being of children in Crete, we dedicated our efforts in the development of the idea.

Pericles studied Marketing and Tourism and received his master’s degree in international business from the University of East London. He had been creating interactive geography games for children since 2017 and came up with the idea of The Children's World Lounge in 2021.
Petros born in Athens, is a physicist who graduated from the National Kapodistrian University of Athens. His love for understanding the world through the forces of the universe and his ability to communicate scientific knowledge with simplicity characterize him. He has many years of experience in companies that lead the world in the development of new technologies and is our chief scientific advisor. Rena is a painter and engraver who studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts and at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-arts in the Sorbonne and acts as our chief cultural advisor. She has been honored by the Academy of Fine Arts of Paris and her works have been displayed at Greece’s National Gallery. Theoni has been a mathematician and a secondary school teacher with more than 15 years of experience, bringing meaningful insight to the pedagogical curation of our programmes and Chrysoula, a successful entrepreneur, brings an extensive business experience, crucial to our iniative's operations.

Methodology used

Driven by our care for children, our experience in creating and hosting interactive children games since 2017 and our interest in discovering and knowing more about our planet, we created The Children's World Lounge a new, educational and entertainment Center in Greece, that is dedicated to activities that blend playing with knowledge about nature and culture.

Children visiting our facilities can discover our planet’s natural environment and habitats and all the amazing landscapes from around the world. All of its countries, metropoles, as well as other fascinating remote places. The peoples, their histories and their cultural heritage from all parts of our planet and how life is today in all the continents of the earth.

We have created our own method which is based on creating groups of children that embark together on a journey of discovering the world. We cultivate the conditions to form an inclusive experience where we share information with each other and jointly participate in the process of gaining knowledge for each part of the world we are exploring. To achieve this objective, we have developed four consecutive thematic units :
1) the ABCs of the world.
2) Symbols of the world.
3) Life in our world.
4) World show time.

Specifically :

' The ABCs of the world ' playful activities using satellite apps like Copernicus's Sentinel , NASA's Landsat, other digital tools, the globe and maps to gain knowledge about the environment and the landscapes of each area.

' Symbols of the world ' focusing on the history and the footprint of its people, through their cultural identity and heritage like the arts, writings and traditions of each place.

' Life in our world ' we explore the everyday life of each region, with conversations we have with guests from abroad with online video calls.

' World show time ' a festive atmosphere dedicated to each area with music, geography and cultural knowledge competitions, quizzes, puzzles and games.

How stakeholders are engaged

At The Children's World Lounge our basic objective was to design, present and host a wide range of programmes with interdisciplinary activities for children living in Crete between the ages of 5 to15.

Due to the innovative concept of our iniative, we experienced a warm welcome from the begining by many parents living in the island with whom we shared our idea and who offered to help us understand more about their children and their needs as families in terms of informal education activities they would attend and entertainment needs and likes.

By communicating our idea to the school community in Crete, we also understood that a vital sign for our iniative was going to be our collaboration with educators as they reaffrimed the necessity of our scope and actively helped us along the development of the programmes.

In this context our three main group of stakeholders that we wanted to positively reach by our actions and that we also seeked their active engagement were the children, their families and the local school community and so it is a great milestone for us that 600 children, 90 parents and 55 educators made our idea a wonderful reality and gave us a push to continue with great enthusiasm ahead.

Additionally we recognize the general public living in Crete as a broader stakeholder group that we want to infrom about our work and also the administrative authorities and other govermental and non govermental organizations of the island that deal with nature and culture can be described as a broader group of stakeholders that we seek to have an open and transparent channel of communication and collaboration.

Global challenges

We truly believe that by helping children learn more about our planet's nature and culture we can empower them in their aspiration of creating a better world for themselves and for future generations, a world of peace, friendhsip and solidarity.

And we can all see that the everlasting importance of quality education and understanding of our world is also a true and major necessity in our days gloablly, when we see so many conflicts occuring around our planet based on lack of friendship, lack of human empathy and solidarity, and lack of being able to live in peace with each other, facts that challenge our right to act free in our lives and pursuit our personal and social endevors and dreams.

The Children's World Lounge carries a simple and truthful promise for all people engaging with its programmes in the local community in Crete.

Here, children always have fun and learn all about the world. We are very excited about our mission and we feel honored in offering children pleasant and meaningful experiences that contribute to their quality education, their wellbeing, offer them a new sense of belonging and benefit our societies as well.

Learning transferred to other parties

We'd love to believe that The Children's World Lounge could be recognised as a genuine and valuable iniative that would find many people feeling enthusiastic with the idea of engaging with it and that it could attract friends and supporters throughout Europe and the world.

We can imagine a network of Children's World Lounges in many different cities of Europe, showcasing the richness that exists in our nature, in our cultures and in cultural heritage and becoming Cultural Centers of reference for many children in their local urban or rural environments.

The contents of the programmes are both of global and local interest, thus making them ideal to be easily transfered into other countries and adjustable to local cultures, languages and patterns of operating models.
