Description of the project

Summary

The Bauhaus Library project aims to renovate the existing library and incorporate sustainable features. Our target groups are international students and students on campus. We have specific objectives such as creating a sense of belonging and promoting a green and inclusive environment. By integrating the values of the New European Bauhaus, we aim to improve the lives of people in our community in the long term by providing a sustainable and inspiring space for learning and cultural exchange.

Key objectives for sustainability

The key objectives of our project in terms of sustainability are to promote renewable energy through the use of a solar incubator, create a green space with a garden, and implement eco-friendly practices throughout the library. These objectives have been met by incorporating solar panels, utilizing sustainable materials for renovations, and implementing recycling and waste reduction initiatives. Our project can serve as an exemplary model by showcasing how sustainable practices can be integrated into educational spaces, inspiring others to adopt similar initiatives.

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

Our project's main goal is to create a visually stunning and immersive library space. We have achieved this by incorporating modern and innovative design elements, such as open spaces, natural lighting, and vibrant artwork. Additionally, we're planning to showcase students' artwork through exhibitions and offer art workshops, including art therapy sessions. These initiatives will further enhance the aesthetics and cultural benefits of the space, providing an exemplary experience for visitors. It's all about creating a vibrant and inclusive environment where everyone can explore their artistic potential.

Key objectives for inclusion

We have ensured accessibility by incorporating inclusive design principles, making the library space accessible to people of all abilities. For example, we're including a collection of books specifically for blind individuals, ensuring equal access to literature. In terms of inclusive governing systems, we're involving the student community in decision-making processes to ensure their voices are heard. By integrating these principles and societal models, our project aims to set an exemplary standard for inclusivity, providing a space where everyone feels welcome and has equal opportunities for learning and cultural exchange. It's all about creating a library that truly reflects the needs and experiences of the community.

How Citizens benefit

Students from our university have played a crucial role in this project. First of all, this project is written by students. We've actively involved other students in various ways, such as conducting community consultations, surveys, and workshops to gather their input and ideas. Their involvement had a significant impact on the project, shaping its direction, design, and services. They have helped us understand their needs, preferences, and aspirations, ensuring that the library truly reflects their desires. By involving students, we've fostered a sense of ownership and belonging, making the project a collective effort that benefits and positively impacts the entire community.

Innovative character

We're incorporating sustainable features like a solar incubator for plants which promotes green living and education. By prioritizing places and people that need it the most, we're creating a more inclusive and equitable space. The integration of the New European Bauhaus values adds a unique touch, combining aesthetics, sustainability, and quality of experience. Our goal is to inspire and improve lives in the long term by providing a sustainable and inspiring environment for learning and cultural exchange.

Disciplines/knowledge reflected

In the design and implementation of our project, we incorporated various disciplines and knowledge fields. We had representatives from architecture, environmental science, education and social sciences working together. These different fields interacted through collaborative meetings, workshops, and brainstorming sessions. The added value of this multidisciplinary approach was the diverse perspectives and expertise that each field brought to the table. It allowed us to create a holistic and well-rounded project that considers environmental impact, educational needs, social inclusivity, and sustainable practices. The collaboration between these fields ensured that we addressed the project's objectives from multiple angles, resulting in a more comprehensive and impactful outcome.

Methodology used

The methodology of the library project involves the engagement of students and student organizations for consulting and surveying student needs. The result shows that students lack an interactive educational space, therefore, a group was formed to work on the design. To get the necessary support, we involved the rector of the faculty and its employees in the implementation of the project. We integrated different disciplines including architecture, environmental sciences, education, social sciences, sustainability and mental health.

How stakeholders are engaged

First and foremost, we involved the student organization hoping to regain some ideas about our project. The process is done by projecting a survey. The survey was done successfully and we obtained the needed answers.

Then, at the local level, we included a children's village with which we agreed that they would use our library if we realized the project.

Then we had a regional consultation with a company from North Macedonia on offers to make inclusive books for blind people from recycled plastic.

Global challenges

By prioritizing places and people that need it the most, we're tackling inequality and promoting inclusivity. The integration of sustainable features and practices helps combat environmental challenges and promotes a greener future. Through our focus on creating a sense of belonging and cultural exchange, we're fostering social cohesion and understanding. By addressing these challenges at a local level, we contribute to the larger global goals of sustainability, equality, and community well-being.

Learning transferred to other parties

Our project has several elements that can be replicated or transferred to other places and contexts. The participatory approach we're using, involving community engagement and interdisciplinary collaboration, can be applied in various projects to ensure inclusivity and diverse perspectives. The incorporation of sustainable features like solar incubators and inclusive design principles can inspire other green initiatives. Additionally, the use of art workshops, exhibitions, and art therapy sessions can enhance cultural benefits in different spaces. The key is to adapt these elements to the specific needs and characteristics of each place and group of beneficiaries.
