The Falleta Space aims to reuse and adapt a multi-use space, which was abandoned and used as a warehouse, into the community and cultural space that the town of San Juan de Plan needs to avoid and reduce environmental impacts and promote durability by not having to build a new building. (AMBITION I: reuse). The existing spaces will be used, as has already been done in the case of the “La Estiva” Pastoreo School and the “A Vezinal” coworking space. In addition, a Fire Museum and a neighbourhood hall will be added for the enjoyment of the entire population of San Juan de Plan and its cultural and livestock associations.

The “La Estiva” Pastoral School integrated in the Falleta Space seeks to train students every year and transmit the principles of reuse and circularity around extensive high mountain livestock farming, which is in danger of disappearing in the European Union due to an abusive agri-food industry that disrespects the environment and its biodiversity (AMBITION II: closing the circle).

In the municipality of San Juan de Plan is the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, a colossal protected area that from this part of the Sobrarbe Region extends towards the Ribagorza Region. It is the best representative of the high mountain ecosystems of the Iberian Peninsula. This initiative seeks to continue preserving a great natural and ecological heritage, extensive livestock farming and the way of life of the inhabitants of San Juan de Plan and to transmit it through the different community areas that will make up the Falleta Space, especially through the Interpretation Centre located in the urban area outside this building, the Fire Museum and the “La Estiva” Grazing School (AMBITION III: regenerate)
The combination of several elements in the Falleta Space (Fire Museum, La Estiva Shepherding School, Neighbourhood Events Hall, A Vezinal Coworking Space, urbanised outdoor space, Posets-Maladeta Natural Park Interpretation Centre, “El Regancho” Bar-Restaurant and the recreational area for girls and boys) creates a synergistic effect, so that the area has become a magnet that attracts a constant flow of new visitors, inviting them to enjoy and reconnect with the natural environment, its traditions, culture and leisure (AMBITION I: activate). An important objective of the project is to make the outdoor area of the building visually and aesthetically in tune with the natural character of the environment and to bring people together to experience and enjoy beauty through the culture of the territory (AMBITION II: connect). The project offers a warm, welcoming and beautiful rural environment, despite the low budget available for its development (AMBITION I: activate). The role of local architecture (stone walls, slate roof) in this case is to provide a welcoming and collective space for people (AMBITION II: connect).

Espacio Falleta (re)activates an ecosystem of places in San Juan de Plan (AMBITION I: activate), located in the lower part of the village next to the River Cinqueta, renovated and reused. It brings the population together (AMBITION II: connect) in the creative and collective experience of their traditions (AMBITION III: integrate) and encourages them to interact with their cultural, social and natural environment, fostering their sense of belonging (AMBITION II: connect).

The revitalization of this old multi-use building and its surroundings will improve its aesthetics and quality, bringing a new meaning to the place, with the aim of hosting cultural events (exhibitions, congresses, concerts, environmental education sessions, etc.) (AMBITION III: integrate).
The Falleta Space is inclusive by design: it has no physical barriers and is publicly accessible and open to all people without distinction of any kind (AMBITION I: include). It is located in the lower part of the town where there is road access, a bicycle parking lot is also intended to be incorporated, and the entire outdoor area of the spaces is fitted with ramps. The A Vezinal coworking space and other elements that make up the Falleta Space are at street level; and the La Estiva Pastoreo School has elevator access as it is located on the 2nd floor.

The project also seeks to create a living community where diverse groups can meet, get to know each other and interact peacefully (AMBITION III: transform). The project also incorporates innovative ways of thinking about the relationship between human beings, their culture and nature, the town and the protected area. It draws the community's attention to its responsibility for the state of the environment and creates a positive and easy-to-follow example of extensive livestock conservation and biodiversity protection (AMBITION III: transform).

Espacio Falleta is immersed in urban heritage and the decision-making processes are in charge of local associations together with the City Council that coordinate the space: the Corro d’es Bailes Cultural Association, the San Juan de Plan Livestock Farmers Association, coworking professionals and students from the Pastoreo School (AMBITION II: consolidate). As the group of people involved in the project is diverse, Espacio Falleta has full capacity to attract a mixed audience of users to participate in its public program. Almost all of its activities are free and, therefore, fully accessible to the public. Only the Pastoreo School entails a cost, but with a scholarship program by the San Juan de Plan City Council to make it accessible, and the coworking space has a monthly cost of €50.
The administration has maintained a continuous dialogue with all the agents involved in the Initiative through presentations, publications and conversations (AMBITION I: consult). The building was designed and built by local companies, and each of the spaces was agreed upon with the majority of the population of San Juan de Plan. In this way, the La Estiva Grazing School was created with the total involvement of the ranchers, a coworking space was generated for local or external professionals who establish the population. And other community and neighborhood spaces will be generated such as the fire museum that will promote the sense of belonging and intergenerational exchange, as well as the neighborhood hall and meeting spaces that will be used by local associations such as the Corro d’es Bailes and the Ganaderos. We must not forget the Interpretation Center or the Bar-Restaurant El Regancho and its recreational area that are also part of this Falleta Space, but which are a symbol of community and unity as it is the only area of this kind in the entire municipality.

The project implements a system of active participation from below, starting with the inhabitants of the town of San Juan de Plan. Firstly, active and enterprising people propose the project, get involved with the community (AMBITION I: consult), seek support from the municipality together, look for financial resources (AMBITION II: co-develop), implement and take charge of their joint work in the community and develop other projects or create unity in the different shared spaces of the Falleta Space.
The Falleta Space seeks to horizontally connect different agents of the municipality of San Juan de Plan, on the one hand, the general population whose main economic activity is extensive high mountain livestock farming with other agents and link them more with culture through local cultural associations. A reference day will be the Chistabina Culture Day which is celebrated around this new Falleta Space with a crafts fair, a display of traditional dances, creating an environment that fosters a sense of belonging and the exchange of knowledge (AMBITION I: work locally). The Pastoreo School seeks to unite the students who come to train with livestock farmers through the professional practices they must carry out. All this attracts a common objective of preserving the territory through culture and its economic activity.

This Space, whose name comes from one of the most representative festivals of San Juan de Plan, La Falleta, which, together with the traditional and cultural festivals of another 63 towns in Aragon, Catalonia, Andorra and Occitania, were declared Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO on December 5, 2015, having a global reach at all levels. From there, the Fire Museum will be born, which will be integrated into the Falleta Space and will have the support of regional institutions, as well as the 63 towns that participated in creating this exhibition on "The fire festivals of the summer solstice in the Pyrenees" which will be the content of this Museum. Open to the public, it will aim to disseminate at different levels a tradition that emanates community and transversality for the people of these territories (AMBITION III: work globally).

Furthermore, within this renovated Falleta Space there are other elements such as the Posests-Maladeta Natural Park Interpretation Centre or the Grazing School that seeks to replicate this initiative in other regional and national dimensions (AMBITION II: work at all levels).
The success of the project lies in the collaboration between various professionals: citizens, farmers, hoteliers, teachers, entrepreneurs and socio-cultural promoters. This heterogeneous group has been able to apply formal and informal knowledge to achieve a common goal (AMBITION III: to be beyond the discipline), that of promoting the cultural heritage of San Juan de Plan through intergenerational exchange, the regeneration of the natural space and creating a greater sense of belonging.

The project arose from the union of efforts between the City Council, whose objective is to create unity and community through pastoralism and culture, a young man with the idea of certifying the profession of shepherd, local farmers, local entrepreneurs and the local cultural Association. These entities or people combine and transmit intersectoral knowledge to overcome common challenges such as depopulation, the loss of biodiversity or the sense of belonging (AMBITION II: to be interdisciplinary). The participation of people from diverse backgrounds and with different levels of familiarity with pastoralism, culture and rural development allows for peer learning and the transmission of knowledge (AMBITION III: Being beyond the discipline).

Espacio Falleta incubates many initiatives: Pastoreo School, Museo del Fuego, Hostelería, Centro de Interpretación, Salón Vecinal, Coworking “A Vecinal”, encouraging them to transfer their disciplinary knowledge to new areas of activity, creating the hybrid methodologies seen in the project results. In view of current global challenges such as the climate emergency or rural depopulation, which require the connection of social and natural sciences (AMBITION II: Being interdisciplinary) through traditions and digitalization, Espacio Falleta is creating a space for the interaction of interdisciplinary knowledge and approaches where its participants are active co-creators of innovative research and ideas (AMBITION III: Being beyond the disc.)
The innovation is to group together in the Falleta Space a community area, accessible and inclusive, that brings together various projects in the same common initiative, respecting the aesthetics and the environment of the place. Currently this area is made up of a natural and urban outdoor area and an old building whose initial purpose was that of a multipurpose hall for San Juan de Plan, but it ended up being used as a village warehouse.
The classic action of a multipurpose hall as the only purpose of a hall for the village festivals is discarded in favour of having an innovative character, creating a community, educational, social and recreational space that promotes the heritage of the territory, both cultural and environmental. It will bring together projects such as a La Estiva Shepherding School, a Coworking space “A Vezinal”, rooms for meetings and work of local Associations such as the Corro D’es Bailes and the Ganadera, all of them already in use, but still in germination. In addition to other older projects such as the Interpretation Centre, the Bar-Restaurant El Regancho or the adjacent recreational area. And the new places that are to be created in the main building and the exterior surroundings of Espacio Falleta, a fire museum that makes visible and creates a sense of belonging to the population of San Juan de Plan and unity with other valleys and municipalities of the Aragonese, Catalan, Andarrono and Occitan Pyrenees; and a neighbourhood hall to hold conferences, a rehearsal area for the Corro D’es Bailes Association, a space for craft and livestock fairs, artistic and recreational activities, etc… and the urbanisation and renaturalisation of the exterior space adjacent to this main building. Rarely does a municipal building in a rural high mountain area include so many diverse initiatives and disciplines that coexist in the same place, Espacio Falleta, with a common goal of disseminating and transferring knowledge through pastoralism and culture.
The approach used is highly participatory, the Falleta Space will not work if the small initiatives that make it up do not cooperate and maintain active communication and listening between them.

The manager and leader of the initiative is the San Juan de Plan Town Hall but each small project has been born from the interest of the population in promoting the sense of belonging through the traditions and culture of the place, as well as putting value on a way of life, predominant in the Chistau Valley, extensive high mountain livestock farming. With the same aim of avoiding rural depopulation and preserving the heritage and biodiversity of the territory.

In March 2025, a participatory consultation process will begin that will last a maximum of 1 month to present the municipal project proposal and receive suggestions, proposals and opinions to make the relevant changes or modifications requested by civil society and the population of San Juan de Plan. First there will be an individual consultation phase and finally collective work sessions with all the agents involved.

All the spaces are communal and are open to all the public of the town after coordination with one of the entities, associations or direct users of the Falleta Space. Each decision that is taken about the place and its different areas will be taken by a participatory assembly of the parties involved and communicated to the population of the entire town.

The aim is to build a community and present new joint projects to local, national and European Union administrations that promote the sustainable development of the territory.
The idea of hosting several small projects in a single space or built area can be transferred or replicated. In this way, a transfer of knowledge and a link between disciplines is generated, which, if not for their own dynamics, would not make the effort to seek links, in addition to the reduction of the environmental impact by bringing together and not dispersing buildings, installations, etc. Above all, in municipalities with a small population where strength lies in unity. San Juan de Plan has around 153 inhabitants, so it can be replicated in municipalities with a small population.

The Fire Museum that will be integrated into the Falleta Space can be replicated in any of the other 63 towns in the Aragonese, Catalan, Andorran and Occitan Pyrenees that were recognized as Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, like us, for the summer solstice fire festival and that share space with other cultural, educational or cultural initiatives in those municipalities.

Finally, extending and expanding, not only in Spain but in the rest of the European Union, the Pastoral Schools and recognizing this profession with an academic degree or professional certificate will ensure the conservation not only of pastoralism at a European level in its culture and traditions but also in the conservation of the biodiversity of natural ecosystems, especially in high mountains, which have to lead the fight against climate change and promote sustainable development.
One of the main challenges it addresses is the loss of the sense of belonging, which is key to avoiding the first step in the process of rural depopulation. It also addresses the generation of opportunities by creating spaces that motivate all types of population, young people, adults and the elderly, to want to stay in the territory, undertake or develop new projects that favour the sustainable development of their town through the transfer of knowledge and cooperative work between small initiatives. The Fire Museum, a neighbourhood hall for cultural and community actions, or the coworking space will promote the municipality's heritage in order to disseminate it through the intergenerational experience to other people and territories.

Also the fight against climate change through initiatives that favour the reuse of spaces already built in areas sensitive to abusive urbanisation that would destroy the aesthetics of the place, or cultural and educational practices such as the Pastoreo School that promotes the value of extensive livestock farming as a measure to mitigate climate change and for the conservation of biodiversity, in this case of the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park.

Finally, all these initiatives and their cooperative work among them by sharing the same place, Espacio Falleta, and joint global challenges will promote the unity of the people and, therefore, the sense of community as opposed to the individualism that is prioritized in many rural high mountain environments, which does not allow for a fair and sustainable development of the territory.
The initiative is already at an intermediate level of maturity, as several of the small projects that make up the Falleta Space are already functioning, or at least, their infrastructure is complete. The most advanced are the Posets-Maladeta Park Interpretation Centre and the El Regancho Bar-Restaurant, which have been in use for several years. The youngest are the La Estiva Shepherding School, in its third year of operation, and the A Vezinal coworking space, which will soon be up and running.

Some of them have been integrated into the old multi-purpose building, thus reusing an already constructed building, reducing environmental impacts and which was renovated to maintain the aesthetics of the architectural heritage of the place, stone walls and slate roof. The aim is to regenerate the very abandoned environment by urbanising it and renaturalising it so that it is in harmony with the landscape. And accessibility is being promoted to all spaces so that there are no barriers of any kind.

The new spaces, the Fire Museum and the Neighbourhood Hall, are being designed and planned with the participation of the parties most involved in the day-to-day running of the Falleta Space, local associations, professionals, farmers, etc. As well as with the local and regional administrations which support the Project from the San Juan de Plan Town Hall which leads it, but with the support of the Sobrarbe Region and the Provincial Council of Huesca. All of this will be carried out by local construction companies and maintained thanks to the neighbours, associations and people who participate in the Shepherding School or the Coworking space if it has external professionals.
