The main goals of the The Active House Apartments were:
- green and healthy renovation of the empty attic floor in multifamily exhisting building
- balance of 9 criteria in 3 Active House principles: Comfort, Energy, Impact on the Environment
- create a study case with a ckear a trasferable aproach for scaling. The potential of the Podil neighborhood in Kyis is 60 000 m2 of empty dark attics.
COMFORT
1.1 Daylight.
Daylight was carefully calculated by verified software and confirmed by real measurements. More than 70 % of living rooms has an access to the daylight illuminance more than 300 lux.
1.2. Thermal environment.
The building suggests occupants not less than +21 °C inside air temperature in cold period and not more than +26.5 °C in hot period.
1.3. Indoor air quality.
Hybrid ventilation ensures that CO2 concentration will be less 800 ppm inside with minimum energy costs.
1.4. Acoustic quality was improved to 5 star hotels level for the new rooms. Inhabitants sleep well.
ENERGY.
2.1. Energy consumption for heating, cooling, domestic hot water, lightening), ventilation) is 88 kWh/m2.
2.2. Renewables. Heat pumps reduced energy demand on 74,1 % for heating, cooling and domestic hot water. As a rusult Final energy consumption for heating, cooling, domestic hot water, ventialtion and lightening is only 27,1 kWh/m2.
2.3. Primary energy performance for heating, cooling and domestic hot water is 62.25 kWh/m2
ENVIRONMENT.
3.1. Emissions: The Global warming potential (GWP) of the building is less 26.3 kg CO2 eq. / m2 per year.
3.2. Freshwater consumption is reduced by water saving plumbings: Toilet water use < 6 litre per flush, Shower water use < 8 litre per minute, Tap water use < 5 litre per minute.
We are creating our homes not for energy saving only. We need our houses for a healthy life without negative impact on the climate.

SUSTAINABLE.
In 1987, the United Nations Brundtland Commission defined sustainability as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs". We need a healthy life first, with low energy consumption and positive impact on the environment.
The most sustainable building is the one that isn't built.
The project follows hierarchy for resourceefficient construction:
1. Utilise vacant spaces
2. Renovate an exhisting building
3. Extend an old building
4. Build new
In Active House Radar you wil find project's parameters of Sustainability in balance, connection and proiritarization with Comfort of living and Energy.

BEAUTIFUL.
The project follows the local building codes and save the shape of the roof as it was before. It means, that the attic is fully integrated in the initial environment.
Inside the apartment the biophilia design was focused on the best level of daylight and connection with the environment. Strtegically position of the roof windows helped to reach more than 300 lux at the 65 % of apartments area. The high level of daylight is reached even in the winter periods.
Attention to the acoustic quality allows the inhabitants to find calm places and have a good sleeping like in 5 star hotels.
Hybrid system of ventilation with CO2 concentration below 800 ppm ensured high indoor air quality.
New experience is to live healthy, have opportunity to relax and fully recharge yourself at home, to work productive in case of home office and study efficiency for children.
According to the "Clever classrooms: Summary report of the HEAD project", light, temperature and air quality accounting for 49 % of the learning impact.
Health is a new aesthetics!
The project can be exemplary in the context of the Podil neighborhood in Kyiv. Every Ukrainian today is worthy of such housing. Especially when there are 60,000 m2 of dark attics that can be adapted into sustainable housing for 700-1000 Ukrainian families.

PARTICIPATORY.
This project is a good example that sustainable apartments and green renovation is possible in context of Kyiv. The potential of the project is 60 000 m2 of exhisting attic floors locally. Citizens could make a choise what do they need on their roofs:
- new apartments of module officies (colivings of coworkings)
- organic roof farms for local markets, food shops and restaurants
- photovoltaic roofs
- more green roof for green and public spaces

TRANSDISCIPLINARY.
Transdisciplinary is in the c DNA of Active House holistic approach more, than 10 years. Balancing, not calculations only. We are focus on balancing 3 key Principles (spheres, disciplines):
- Comfort of living, well-being and health
- Energy
- Impact on the Environment.
We have very efficient tool for this - Active House Radar. This figure shows how all criteria with each principle are balanced against each other and depend on projects goals and prioritization.
Energy efficient building does not mean "green' building.
Green building does not mean Healthy building.
But the balancing the criteria according to the Active House principles allow to create real sustainable building (confirmed by digits), leading us to healthier and cleaner world.

INNOVATIONS.
- The approach is in balancing 9 criteria in 3 principles of Comfort, Energy and Environment
- New vision how to live, work or relax on the roofs
Podil district has more than 100 OSBB (OSMD - the associations of co-owners of apartment buildings) who could find the best function for the roofs of their buildings.
- In case of apartment and office function, we can create the best conditions to the inhabitants with the minimum impact on the Environment
- Green roofs could protect the district from the overheating and flooding.
- Photovoltaic roofs could create a pisitive energy distrcit and reduce dependece from fossil fuels.
