Krasnodvir castle renovation
Renovation and ecologically oriented development of the Krasnodvir castle territory
The renovation of Krasnodvir Castle aims to transform the area surrounding the remnants of the town's oldest building, blending its rich history with the modern urban landscape of Nadvirna. The project will feature beautiful landscaping with native, non-invasive plants and creating a step-free public space around the historic landmark. It will also actively promote the historical, cultural and natural heritage of Nadvirna, a historical settlement near the Carpathian foothills.

The main goal of the project is the restoration and environmentally friendly development of the degraded territory of the Krasnodvir Castle through the recreation of the ecologically sensitive landscaping, implementation of environmental practices, development of local tourism and creating conditions for a circular economy. The project will be implemented in a close collaboration with the public organization "Nadvirna Tourist Information Center".
Target audience: adults, youth, children, people with disabilities.
Objectives:
- to create a ecological and historical public environment with elements of local material

- to develop and implement landscape design of the degraded territory of the Krasnodvir Castle, which provides for the regeneration of natural ecosystems, preservation of trees, and creation of walking paths;
- to develop and install interactive information stands for environmental educational stands with elements of barrier-free (inclusive) accessibility;
- to install containers for separate waste collection and a composter.
Results achieved:
The presence of a permanent ecological and historical public space on the restored and environmentally oriented territory of the Krasnodvir Castle will create the feeling of the belonging and to the spirit of the local historical heritage (fortifications of the early XVII century), and traditional material culture (housing, tools).

The public eco-center will create conditions for constant and systematic access to the local historical heritage and material culture of the Nadvirna district.
The ecological design of the territory of the ecogical public space located in the Krasnodvir Castle will be based on nature-oriented solutions for the improvement of the territory of the Ivan Franko Nadvirna City Park, which in turn will help prevent the loss of local
biodiversity. The ecological design will have a positive impact on the mental health of local residents, city guests and all visitors.
Separate waste containers and a composter installed on the territory of the community center will help minimize the impact on the natural ecosystem of the city park.

The design of the ecological and historical public space is aimed at the most realistic and authentic presentation of the social and cultural features of the era (XVII-XIX centuries). The castle ruins and elements of the material heritage (traditional housing, tools, and household items) will serve this purpose. The natural and cultural composition will be completed with information stands that will serve as an effective and convenient way to familiarize visitors with the environment of public space.
The new design of the public ecological and historical public space will create cultural benefits for the community of Nadvirna: holding various historical, cultural and artistic events; sustainable development of the region through environmental and educational initiatives; a sense of belonging to the historical heritage and the human-culture-environment relationship.

Physical accessibility, taking into account inclusive principles in landscape design, will help citizens to form relationships between the historical and cultural heritage and the natural environment.
The ecological and historical public space will help to expand opportunities for information exchange between different segments of the population and age groups, which will significantly increase social interaction within the framework of the integration of cultural and social values.
Interactive information stands with elements of barrier-free (inclusive) accessibility will make environmental and educational information publicly available, which will raise awareness and environmental consciousness of the community.

The project's development and implementation involves interdisciplinary connections between history, ecology, geography, biology, and culture. They will help to comprehensively reflect the historical and cultural heritage of the Nadvirna region and the human-culture-environment relationship. The project will involve practitioners: biologists, historians, and cultural experts, whose recommendations will create a comprehensive model of a community historical and ecological public space, which will provide the basis for the proper implementation of the project stages.
Most modern public environmental centers are aimed at disseminating environmental knowledge, preserving nature, and restoring the mental health of the population through interconnection with the natural environment.
A unique innovative aspect of a historical and ecological public space is the combination of preserving historical and cultural heritage with the introduction of sustainable environmental practices. The defining innovative features of the historical and ecological public space are: the symbiosis of cultural and ecological heritage; the availability of interactive historical, cultural and environmental education programs; the creation of a cultural and educational zone based on historical heritage (the ruins of the Krasnodvir castle); the use of biotechnology and ecological restoration of landscapes.
The historical and ecological public space is developing new approaches to environmental and cultural heritage preservation by engaging citizens in various events and activities. This will help raise environmental awareness, as well as promote and restore cultural heritage through sustainable development of the region.

The project's methodology is based on an interdisciplinary approach that includes elements of environmental and biological sciences (biodiversity conservation, sustainable development, and the use of biotechnology), culture (preservation of material culture) and sociology (volunteering, community associations).
The creation of the historical and ecological public space will become an impetus for the creation of similar public spaces in other regions of Ukraine, based on similar methodological aspects, including interdisciplinary approaches and innovative aspects. The model of a historical and ecological community space can be applied in different regions by adapting to their local conditions, which will contribute to the development of ecologically and culturally enriched communities.
Today, the global challenges that require urgent solutions and changes are:
- destruction of ecosystems and loss of biodiversity due to urbanization;
- destruction of historical sites due to climate change;
- loss of intangible cultural heritage (traditional crafts, tools and knowledge of their use);
- remoteness of people from nature and culture;
- absence or lack of public environmental spaces for education, training within the framework of community cohesion.
Local solutions implemented in the project that minimize the impact of global challenges in the region include:
- creation of ecological landscape design around the Krasnodvir Castle;
- creation of a living history museum within the public eco-center, where visitors can get acquainted with the material cultural heritage and learn traditional techniques (crafts);
- introducing the idea of ecotourism as a means of engaging the public in the restoration of historical and natural monuments.
The uniqueness of local solutions lies in the integration of modern measures and historical experience to most effectively address global and local problems. Their implementation will help protect the environment and revive traditional culture and interest in it.

Due to the war hostilities in Ukraine, a large number of people need to restore their moral and psychological state. Thanks to the equipped historical and ecological public space, visitors will be able to restore their peace of mind, connect with nature, and discover new cultural and natural values.
