The mediation toolkit is the result of a co-creation between a sports club that welcomes people with handicaps for a mixed sport, baskIn, and a group of female designers. Together, we have created a device that meets the needs of coaches and mediators to help them learn and understand the rules of the sport in a fun way.
The way young people look at the handicap is changing, thanks in particular to the very principle of baskIn, which is a shared practice. They are assigned a role according to their abilities, and each role has a complementary effect on the game.
Our kit helps to raise the profile of this sport, to teach it and to raise awareness of the fact that by playing together we can overcome prejudices.
It's a case designed by (co-creation) and for everyone in an inclusive way. In other words, it has been designed from the outset to appeal to as many people as possible. We have adapted the readability and comprehension criteria of the different materials to suit the different people we meet, whether they have a physical/mental handicap or not. It is this complementarity and sharing that is the strength of our toolkit.
The prototypical version of the kit has already had a positive impact on BaskIn players at the Novosports club. Reading and understanding instructions and game tactics seems to be easier thanks to the tool.

Our main objective in terms of sustainability is to design a tool that is co-constructed and designed to last over time, since it can be adapted to everyone. In other words, we designed each of the devices in the kit without any validation logic. This means that anyone can use the kit and make it their own, without having to worry about adapting or adding to it in order to understand it.
The sustainability of our project is also reflected in the way it is produced. We wanted to be able to produce the kit using resources close to home. This means that we can produce the entire kit in a labfab. We wanted to be able to control the provenance and choice of materials so that we could offer a project that was coherent in every aspect. A responsible, ethical and local project.

The aesthetic codes of this project are inspired by those of BaskIn and board games, using geometric shapes specific to the playing field. This aesthetic makes it easier to understand the use and handling of the various devices included in the kit. They plunge players into the world of sports games, making it easier to immerse themselves in the game and understand the rules. The use of thick solid lines, contrasting colours and figurines to represent the players gives everyone the chance to participate to the best of their mental and/or motor abilities.
The design of the case can be adapted to suit everyone. For example, the lines of the playfield and the playing areas are raised for the visually impaired, making them easier to access. What's more, the size 14 font in the explanation booklets makes them easier to read.

Inclusion and accessibility to sport through play are the very essence of our project. It is aimed at all people, disabled or not, to raise awareness and democratise the shared sport of Baskin. It helps to raise the profile of the sport and makes it easier to understand the rules, so it's easy to move from theory to practice.
Inclusion and accessibility have been an integral part of our creative process right from the start of the project. We co-constructed this project with the users of this device as part of a call for co-creation projects. In this way, the project was born and evolved with its users.

The sports mediation case created during the Handesign residency programme supported by the DRAC Ile-de-France is destined to remain with the Novosport club and become an integral part of the baskin facilities.
The sports mediation kit is the result of a co-creation between a sports club for disabled people (Novosports), baskIn and a design collective (Collectif Fair Play). The co-creation with the players took place during Friday evening training sessions. They were able to test the different prototypes by playing and giving their opinions using a fun note-taking tool. Each week, we came up with a modified version of the prototype in response to the comments made during the previous training session. As a result, the current version of the kit is as close as possible to the field and to their needs in terms of accessibility and sporting activities.

The Novosport disabled sports club is our partner in this project. We co-created the project with them. We met every week from March to July and then again in September to run co-creation workshops, including testing and evaluating the project.
The ReSport Lille recycling shop, with whom we have developed a partnership to use the textile materials to be recycled in the project.

For this project, we used the methods of social design in our approach and conception, as much for building the confidence of the participants, during the creation and running of the workshops, as for the production of the devices and the presentation of the project.
The discipline of social design combines skills in facilitation, coordination, teaching and sports coaching. We had to develop skills in supporting people with disabilities and master the rules of basketball and baskin.
We also used our design skills from our apprenticeship course: textile, space and graphic design. These skills were put to good use in the co-creation, complementing the skills of the club's players and sports coaches.

In short, this project is a playful transitional tool to make understanding sport more accessible, giving it an innovative character in terms of the social aspects of sport. It can be used in a variety of contexts: raising awareness at trade fairs and events, young audiences, schools, basketball and baskin training sessions, by specialist educators. Sports Mediation Kit, BaskIn is a fun and educational device for shared practice of a sport that meets the needs of players learning the rules of the game, whatever their handicap.

This project is also socially innovative. The democratisation of shared sporting activities is helping to change the way people look at handicap, thanks in particular to the very principle of baskIn, which is a shared activity. Players are assigned a role according to their abilities, and each role has a complementary effect on the game. Our kit helps to raise the profile of this sport, to teach it and to raise awareness of the fact that by playing together we can overcome prejudices.
Version 1 (the prototype) is already being used by a variety of audiences, and that's where its strength lies. For example, with schoolchildren, young people in difficulty, during awareness-raising campaigns on the theme of handicap and sport, during events and fairs in the field of sport and handicap, and during basketball and baskin sports training.

We used the methodology of social design to build this project on a human and material level. This approach, which advocates working together and co-creation, enabled us to harness and merge the different skills (practical and intellectual) of the baskin coaches, the players with a handicap and our design skills.
This merging and working together through joint reflection, co-creation workshops and experimentation with different prototypes has enabled us to propose devices that are as accurate as possible in terms of use and positive impact on the practice of baskin.
We have been a driving force in coordinating and taking into account the skills of everyone involved, adapting the design of the devices according to the criteria of legibility and comprehension for different people, whether or not they have a physical/mental handicap.

All the elements of our project could be reproduced or transferred to other places, groups of beneficiaries and contexts, simply by transferring the files to these new beneficiaries. In fact, we have designed this project so that it can be duplicated. Our co-creation approach can be used by everyone and for everyone as long as we choose to address everyone in a truly inclusive way. In other words, we take into account everyone's point of view in the same way, without hierarchy. It's not a question of the knowing asking the non-knowing for their opinion, but of sharing experiences and learning. The various stakeholders are on the same level.
The Sports Mediation Kit, BaskIn provides a local solution to the global challenge of reducing inequalities. It takes up the challenge of enabling everyone to take part in physical activity and/or sport, and to do so to the best of their ability. This project, co-created by a handisport club and a group of designers, is committed to reducing inequalities in access to sport for people with handicaps through the use of playdagogy.
The very principle of the learning through play project includes Sports Mediation Kit and BaskIn as local solutions to the global challenge of quality education.
Game-based teaching stimulates and integrates different skills while having fun. The game is a lever for learning and for reducing apprehension, allowing participants to let go and let themselves be carried away by the game. This game-based learning makes spontaneous interaction flow more smoothly and creates bonds, and is beneficial in the fight against isolation.
This learning method reshuffles the deck when it comes to social norms, helping to develop the psychosocial skills needed to interact with and take account of others in a caring way. In particular, it enhances other abilities and skills such as memory and strategy, as well as spatial awareness and anticipation of the game. Self-confidence is also positively impacted, as is the relationship with the body, in space and with others.

We would like to produce a second, more accomplished version by developing and refining several elements to enable CNAP and DRASES-type production.
The different areas we would like to perfect:
Reworking the prototype box (container) to optimise the various elements so that it can be used over the long term;
The board game: after a test period, we need to ensure that the rules are consistent and that the game logic is effective.
Make any modifications (graphic and/or functional) to the game;
Draw up the most complete possible model of the baskIn learning kit with a view to production;
Create a video explaining how to use the kit.
The sports mediation kit has considerable educational value for schools and people with disabilities. Enabling it to be developed for a version of adapted sport such as BaskIn is a first step towards a more inclusive sport as part of a dynamic of building a society together. The prototype version of the kit has already had a positive impact on BaskIn players at the Novosports club. Reading and understanding instructions and game tactics seems to be easier thanks to the tool. That's why we're convinced of the importance of support and funding to continue developing this system, which could enable many people to learn about shared sport.
