Revitalization of the town center with an urban, communicative, inclusive and ecological marketplace
The project is a revitalization of the town center with an urban, communicative, inclusive and ecological marketplace with many functions. This is intended to increase both the quality of stay, the quality of life and the attractiveness of the town centre and the citizens. A very broad participatory approach was particularly important and broad citizen participation took place. The project is in the final planning phase and finds broad political and public consensus.

41602: Altenberg bei Linz (AT)
Altenberg near Linz has a very compact town centre with a central market square. This forms the centre of the business and social infrastructure. The center meets many requirements. The center and especially the market square are very old and no longer attractive. Above all, transport relations, usability, ecology, communication and cooperation are to be promoted and improved.
A very broad citizen participation process was launched as early as 2017. For this purpose, a 3-day ideas workshop was held and many citizens took part. The result was then worked out and has since formed the basis for further planning. Politics, church, schools, kindergartens, older people, neighbors and local associations were involved.
In addition, a traffic concept was developed by a project office and experts. This is intended to relieve the town centre of traffic, increase traffic safety and generally slow down for more attractive movement in the village.
In workshops on climate protection and climate change adaptation measures, proposals and ideas for the town centre were developed, which were adopted in a separate Altenberg climate strategy.

Depending on the financial resources, this concept is to be implemented together in the near future.
The project with the individual measures can also be implemented in other municipalities and regions and can be adapted to the respective locations.

Community
Our project is particularly sustainable. It is to be built for generations and lead to good cooperation in the community in the long term. Therefore, very broad citizen participation and involvement was very important so that there is sustainable acceptance for the project.
Key goals for sustainability are.
Implementation of climate change mitigation and adaptation measures. Above all, trees, plants and shading are to be implemented. Native, climate-fit trees, plants and woody plants are to be used for this purpose. In general, as many areas as possible should remain unsealed or also be unsealed. The element of water is also to be used in a variety of ways.
In general, ecological materials should be used.
Furthermore, the town centre is to be relieved of traffic and traffic safety increased. In general, the town centre will slow down and exercise in the village will become more attractive. Above all, the quality of stay is to be improved and the situation for pedestrians and cyclists is to be improved.
The approaches to inclusion and accessibility are also sustainable.
It is particularly sustainable that the measures and the project keep the town centre attractive and therefore there is no extinction of the town centre. This is particularly important for the quality of life in the village. Communities are only sustainably attractive if there is a lively community, local amenities and a lively town centre.

The design will be very modern with urban street furniture. This will create pleasant areas to linger, for conversations and for mutual exchange. Shaded areas are created there and the element of water is also used.
The environment will create a pleasant feel-good environment. The integration of the church, the community center and the shops and inns will bring a lively but decelerated zone.
An artistic competition was also held with the University of Art and Design Linz for the design and a prize winner was selected. The winning project will be implemented and realized in the further planning.
There is also a memorial for peace on the market square. This is to be redesigned and modern, and a separate artist competition was also held and awarded for this.
Culturally and socially, the marketplace in particular will offer a wide range of opportunities and enable many events, culture, festivals and community.
Many of the ideas and results of citizen participation, artist competitions can be exemplary for other initiatives.

The town centre is publicly accessible and usable by everyone. The design enables inclusion and is barrier-free. Above all, the communicative possibilities promote togetherness in the community for all parts of the population (young, old, men, women, ...). There are many consumption-free zones in the centre and it is possible and affordable for everyone to stay there.
The broad participatory approach is particularly exemplary.

The implementation is about economical use of resources, ecology. It is also important to further involve citizens, communicate appropriately and monitor success.
