Housing for Refugees Built by Ukrainian Refugees from Ukrainian Hemp
This social project emerged as a response to the influx of refugees into the Morshinska Territorial Community during the first months of the war. Between 2022 and 2023, approximately 200 internally displaced persons (IDPs) settled in the area, with over 100 remaining permanently, requiring housing solutions. By uniting the efforts of all beneficiaries, we created not just housing, but a comprehensive infrastructure project aimed at rehabilitation, education, and support for IDPs, military personnel and their families, children of fallen defenders, orphaned children, and children from vulnerable families.
Overall Goal: The primary goal is to provide housing and assistance to those in need through eco-friendly construction using industrial hemp. Involving residents in the construction process fosters new skills and future employment opportunities, creating a sustainable cycle of support and growth within the community.
Target Groups: The project specifically supports war-affected individuals, internally displaced persons and their children, veterans, and vulnerable populations in need of assistance and rehabilitation.
Results: The project has resulted in the provision of housing for those most in need, job training for over 50 individuals (60% of whom are women), and subsequent employment opportunities for many participants.

The architectural design seamlessly blends natural landscapes with eco-architecture, utilizing materials like hemp, lime, wood, stone, and clay. Recreational areas are designed to enhance psychological comfort and well-being. The exemplary nature of the project is emphasized by the unique hemp building as an example of eco-construction and the combination of architecture with the natural environment for maximum relaxation.
The project provides equal opportunities for all: affordable housing for IDPs, jobs for IDPs in construction, accessibility of the territory for groups with limited mobility, as the project provides for 20% of premises for people with disabilities.
Social rehabilitation for victims through involvement in construction processes, cohesion in a common cause, development of the territory, integration into the natural harmonious environment.
Affordability lies in the fact that the Hempire TM construction technology allows you to avoid financial costs for qualified personnel, because everyone can implement housing on their own.

Local residents actively participated in the construction process, farming activities, and community support initiatives, fostering unity and resilience. Solving the problem of housing and resocialization of IDPs, there was maximum involvement of citizens in support. Their role became the basis for the implementation of the project.
It is thanks to Hemp Recovery that civil society received a new unique infrastructure project, jobs, and a strengthening of the local economy. The most important benefit of this initiative for Ukrainian society was the return of the spirit of brotherhood and unity, a demonstration of effective support for compatriots who need it most.
The role of war-affected citizens was also significant, namely direct participation in all stages of project implementation: from the initial idea formation, participation in the construction process itself, territory development, development of infrastructure around housing to project management and dissemination of this concept among other communities, implementing the acquired experience for the public good in other territories.

Architecture, Construction, Psychology:
The challenges that the war brought to the representatives of these industries pointed to the need to expand the qualifications of architects, builders, and psychologists by combining efforts, experience, and communication to solve problems and develop a special approach to inclusive needs.
The interaction of the architects with qualified builders in the field of hemp construction contributed to the development of the project concept, with technical features for ecological construction using Hempire TM technology, and the layout of the territory with a sense of belonging to nature, both in the exterior design and inside.
Combining psychological practices with natural materials during the construction process accelerated the rehabilitation of people who lost their homes as a result of the war and suffered from mental health problems, reduced anxiety, and stabilized their psycho-emotional well-being.

The most relevant difference between our project and others is that it is the largest ecological building made of industrial hemp for IDPs in Ukraine. We have used innovative eco-friendly building materials based on industrial hemp and lime without the use of cement and other toxic additives. The newest approach also includes a combination of education, rehabilitation, and employment for vulnerable people directly on the territory of the complex. The 16-hectare complex includes lakes for fishing and swimming, a farm (sheep, goats, pigs, chickens), recreation areas (gazebos, hammocks, barbecue areas, a trampoline, and a sports ground).
Creating environmentally friendly housing through the use of Hempire's TM hempcrete technology, which involves the use of natural, Ukrainian building materials made from Ukrainian industrial hemp and Ukrainian lime, which are certified and tested. The uniqueness and ease of use of the technology does not require long training and can be mastered by both men and women.
The integrated approach of combining housing, education, and employment reinforces the main goal of the project and adds to its identity. Natural therapy through contact with the environment and ecological building materials adds to the exclusivity of the methodology.

The use of hemp construction in reconstruction is rapidly spreading throughout Ukraine, as primary processing of industrial hemp is available in almost every region. This has a positive impact on local economies and is convenient in terms of transportation. The ease of use of Hempire TM technology allows not only to quickly build new houses, but also to restore damaged ones, which is especially important during the war. All these aspects allow the project to be scaled up to other communities in need, especially in the de-occupied and most damaged areas.
Lack of housing and resettlement: Due to global challenges, armed conflicts, and natural disasters, many people are displaced and in need of new permanent housing. Ecological construction from hemp will help to quickly solve this problem, as well as restore a sense of belonging to nature and cope with the effects of stress.
Unemployment: the new construction industry and the production of new building materials based on industrial hemp helps create new jobs.
Climate change and reduction of carbon footprint: the industrial hemp we use in construction absorbs 4 times more carbon dioxide per hectare of land during its growth compared to forest plantations. The use of lime absorbs CO2, unlike cement-based concrete, which absorbs oxygen.

One of the key achievements of the project was the provision of permanent housing instead of overcrowded dormitories and jobs for more than 100 Ukrainians, rehabilitation of the military through nature therapy, and an environmentally friendly construction process. Ecological restoration using Hempire TM technology provided a health-preserving effect for the residents. Gaining practical experience in the use of natural building materials, the benefits of using ecological solutions and sustainable development become apparent. As a result, the level of public awareness of environmentally conscious and healthy lifestyle choices is increasing.
The transformation of space in the course of the project has influenced the conscious use of the environment, careful attitude to natural resources, and preservation of the environment for the well-being of future generations.
The newly created community has made progressive changes in the daily life of the local community, strengthened the chain between its own interests and the needs of society, and actually reduced the rate of depopulation and aging in the region.
Hemp Recovery Ukraine is demonstrating that the combination of social impact, sustainable hemp construction, and natural regeneration can be an effective model for rebuilding communities in Ukraine. Through the use of innovative solutions and a sustainable approach, we are contributing not only to the provision of housing, but also to the formation of a healthy, integrated and environmentally responsible society.
Unfortunately, the Russian aggression against Ukraine continues, and the number of internally displaced persons is growing every day, so we decided to build two more analogous buildings.
