innsbruck nature film festival (inff) on tour aims to bring communities closer together while fostering a deeper connection with nature. In rural areas of Tyrol/Austria, access to cultural events and environmental education offers is often limited. By screening world-class environmental films and facilitating discussions in smaller communities, the project bridges this urban-rural divide. The initiative primarily targets rural and peripheral communities in Tyrol, including families, pupils, educators, local policymakers, farmers and environmental enthusiasts.

Thus, our specific objectives include:
- Bringing global cinematic art to local communities
- Raise awareness for the beauty of nature and inspire a deeper understanding of the environment and sustainable solutions
- Opening up opportunities for community members to voice their thoughts and concerns on environmental issues

Therefor the project combines screenings of high-quality, award-winning nature and environmental films with expert panels, workshops, guided nature tours and activities tailored to each location. Events last from a few hours to several days. In only two years, the project has facilitated 20 events and reached more than 1,600 visitors of all ages and social backgrounds in ten different communities of Tyrol. The project is realized by the Naturefestival association, a non-profit organization.

The project ensures accessibility and inclusivity: All screenings are free of charge and where possible barrierfree, creating opportunities for diverse audiences, to participate in cultural and environmental discussions.
The project exemplifies sustainability by promoting environmental awareness, inclusivity through its accessible and welcoming programming, and beauty by showcasing the artistry of nature and environmental storytelling. It enhances quality of life by fostering a sense of belonging and connection within communities while furthering environmental stewardship into local contexts.

The key objectives of inff on tour in terms of sustainability are to foster environmental awareness, promote sustainable practices, and empower communities to take action for a healthier planet. The project leverages film as a powerful tool to educate and inspire action on critical environmental issues. Curated films explore topics like sustainable energy, ecosystem protection, and sustainable living solutions, encouraging audiences to adopt eco-friendly behaviors. These screenings are complemented by expert-led discussions that provide actionable insights into addressing local environmental challenges, fostering community-driven initiatives.

The project exemplifies sustainability by emphasizing local traditions and fostering a sense of belonging while promoting global environmental stewardship. It reduces barriers to participation by bringing events directly to communities, ensuring accessibility and encouraging dialogue among diverse audiences and meeting the local questions. Furthermore, the inclusion of regional experts and stakeholders ensures that the discussions and actions initiated are relevant to the specific needs of each community, making the outcomes practical and impactful.

The project minimizes its own environmental footprint through a low-carbon approach, using mobile cinema technology and locally sourced resources to bring its events to rural and peripheral communities. This not only reduces the project’s impact but also makes it accessible to audiences that might otherwise lack such opportunities.

By creating a platform where ideas, fears, and solutions can be shared openly, inff on tour demonstrates how art and education can drive collective action. Its replicable model of combining cultural outreach with sustainability makes it an exemplary initiative, showing how grassroots efforts can inspire long-term change and contribute to a more sustainable future.
inff on tour delivers a high-quality cultural experience by blending the artistic excellence of the renowned inff with meaningful engagement on environmental topics. Drawing from the international film competition that brings the best environmental films from around the world to Innsbruck, the project ensures that these visually stunning, award-winning films reach broader audiences in rural and peripheral communities.

The project harnesses the aesthetic power of film to captivate audiences and deepen their appreciation for nature’s beauty and fragility. Films are carefully selected to highlight the interconnectedness of humans and nature, fostering emotional connections and appreciation. Together with local stakeholders, each event is tailored to the cultural and environmental context of its location, drawing from the unique beauty and resources of the place.
A key element of the project’s design is its use of place-based storytelling. Events take place in unique settings, including town halls or at open-air venues, and even directly in nature parks such as Karwendel and Tiroler Lech. Especially the outdoor screenings and guided nature tours create immersive experiences where the film’s themes resonate deeply with the surroundings, reinforcing the connection between art, culture, and environment. Watching an environmental documentary under the open sky or beside a river transforms the act of film-watching into a sensory and memorable encounter with nature itself.

By combining the cinematic artistry with thoughtful design and localized programming, inff on tour takes its audience on an inspiring, immersive journey. Its innovative approach showcases how cultural initiatives can integrate aesthetics, storytelling, and meaningful engagement to enrich lives and foster a deeper connection to nature. This grassroots demand has shaped the project’s design and continues to drive its success.

Local stakeholders, including community leaders, educators, cultural organizations, and environmental groups, are actively involved in the planning and execution of events. They help to identify local challenges and interests, find suitable venues and promote the events within their communities. Moreover, local communities engage in covering part of the event costs, further demonstrating their ownership. This collaboration not only ensures that the screenings and activities resonate with local audiences but also strengthens their commitment.
