"Change Your Territory" is a collaborative non-formal education project that aims to promote rural areas and highlight the values and potential of the Alentejo, transforming it into a living laboratory for learning and skills development. It is designed for high school students from the Alentejo, Lisbon, and Algarve regions, strengthening territorial and personal connections while raising awareness among young people from other areas about this territory.
Educational activities, field visits, and community sessions take place in public spaces and historical heritage sites within a practical and rural context, fostering a sense of belonging and community through culture, traditions, and hands-on experiences in local economic sectors. The project seeks to maximize learning through a practical and realistic educational model, establish an emotional and cultural connection with the Alentejo, and promote entrepreneurship and regional development. This multi-level and collaborative approach, involving different stakeholders, aims to develop young people who are more conscious and motivated to contribute to a more inclusive, sustainable, and attractive community.
MUDA_TT+ has had a significant positive impact, engaging 2,054 students and 1,161 community members in 41 activities. The project has greatly enhanced the appreciation of the region, reinforced the sense of belonging, and encouraged youth participation in social and community initiatives. The overall perception of its impact was overwhelmingly positive, with 86.2% of students stating that the project helped them better recognize the value of the Alentejo. Additionally, 72.3% of students reported feeling a stronger emotional connection to the Alentejo and its cultural and natural heritage.
This project is an example of how education, territorial appreciation, and social innovation can transform regions, celebrate traditions, and prepare future generations.

MUDA_TT+ aims to enhance the rural world, promoting a symbiotic connection between local generations and young people from other regions, with a focus on regeneration and reconnection with nature and the community. The Agreste region, predominantly agricultural, with a strong tradition in crafts, sustainable tourism, wine tourism and gastronomy, faces challenges related to climate change and maintaining activity and productivity in some economic sectors that drive development. Thus, the project seeks to make young people understand the need to balance human practices with environmental preservation, encouraging the adoption of adaptation to climate change.
To achieve these objectives, field actions were carried out in a rural context, where young people were able to experience sustainable practices related to natural resource management, sustainable agriculture, ecological tourism and biodiversity preservation. Collaborative activities encouraged participants to apply practices that respect the environment and promote the regeneration of nature.
The workshops held on social entrepreneurship, gastronomy, biodiversity and crafts, articulating environmental sustainability, material circularity and waste transformation, encourage the development of sustainable business ideas and models based on local resources.
Although there is no physical transformation of spaces, public and historic spaces are used as a center for community activities, creating a link between generations and promoting respect for history. Sharing traditional knowledge about the sustainable use of natural resources has strengthened awareness about environmental regeneration and preservation.
This collaborative and practical education model allows us to regenerate and enhance places, connecting them to local identity and promoting a sense of belonging to the community.

MUDA_TT+ focuses on creating collective experiences that connect people to the territory through architecture, culture, and traditions, using immersive activities that generate craftsmanship, heritage, and creative expression. The use of public spaces and historical sites integrates the local context sensitively, creating an engaging and functional environment that showcases the potential of built structures, reflecting their use and recalling their origins, construction, and history over time.
Through intergenerational experiences, such as culinary workshops in community wood-fired ovens built with traditional "tijolo de burro" bricks or in the private kitchens of older residents, participants explored construction techniques like "taipa," which is predominant in the Alentejo. This sustainable method, known for its high thermal inertia, enhances the region’s climatic characteristics by improving thermal performance. However, it has been gradually replaced by concrete, risking the loss of knowledge on soil selection, moisture control, and execution.
Artistic initiatives engage various art forms and artists, including urban painting, tilework, ceramics, carpentry, buinho (reed weaving), and workshops using recycled and organic materials. These activities encouraged participants to reflect on the territory’s identity, revitalize spaces, and create artistic installations as expressions of empathy and different perspectives on rural life. Additionally, wool weaving workshops provided insight into the wool cycle, from its natural state to the creation of garments, highlighting its economic and cultural significance in the region.
This creative process was designed to be collective and participatory, using co-creation practices to discover and rediscover the value of heritage. The built environment plays a central role in uniting communities and should be preserved and innovatively utilized, contributing to collective well-being.

As a collaborative education project using a living and dynamic territory as a learning tool, we must break segregation barriers, promote equal opportunities, and foster collective development based on solidarity and cooperation. By bridging rural and urban regions and bringing together young people from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, the project encourages the freedom to explore rural realities in an immersive and collaborative way, strengthening social cohesion and a sense of belonging.
The collaborative network of partners and resource-sharing is fundamental, as it provides young people with access to workshops, field visits, exchange programs, and co-creation spaces in an inclusive way, enhancing their learning and skill development. Community activities such as crafts, gastronomy, and cante alentejano across generations encourage mutual knowledge exchange within this educational process.
MUDA_TT+ promotes social values such as solidarity, cooperation, and respect for local traditions while also challenging outdated paradigms about rural life. By offering learning experiences and co-creation activities between young people and local communities, the project inspires new ways of living together, focusing on intergenerational and intercommunity relationships. A total of 81.6% of students reported learning the importance of strengthening their sense of community.
This approach has the potential to create a replicable social model in other regions with similar characteristics. Encouraging youth engagement in local solutions, reinforcing a sense of belonging and social responsibility, is essential for developing new forms of community and social organization. Thus, MUDA_TT+ can be considered a transformative example in the context of social inclusion, promoting education, valuing the territory, and contributing to the creation of a new model of collective and sustainable development.
