Let me introduce you to QUARANTINO.
QUARANTINO is a DIY Low-cost PAPER PET for QUARANTINE.
This is an open collaborative project, wide open, fun and free. Please do share.

Print, colour, cut, fold, glue...and ready! This is your Quarantino!
There are four FREE available models at your disposal: the Quarantino Quartet.
There is also the chance to design your own, choosing the blank template.

Quarantino templates are shared online since april 2020, under open CC_BY license.

PHASE III: QUARANTINO EUROPEAN TRIP.

Key objectives for sustainability

SUSTAINABILITY OBJECTIVES:

1st.-MAKE THE BEST FROM LIMITATIONS. Working under tight, urgent and material scarcity conditions can always lead to positive results. This project was a challenge under maximum economy conditions. Restrictions and limitations are no problem if working hard to find a way. Full freedom found again under tight conditions.

HOW: Think clear and simple, simplicity helps a lot. Work from your own field, in this case: Helping through Object Design, as Architecture, Micro-architectures that fit in one hand.

2nd.-MATERIAL ECONOMY MEANS ECOLOGY. No waste of valuable resources, but saving as much as possible, and therefore encourage people to join this responsible way of dealing with ordinary resources.

HOW:  Trash and recycled paper was used whenever possible. Design solves briefing with minimum waste of paper, ink, and glue.

3rd.-DIGITAL SHARING. Taking profit of social networks, worldwide web and available free services can help save time, resources, and even reach almost everywhere in the world from one´s  own home office confinement.

HOW: Thanks Google for their free web content creators applications, thanks to Adobe for their free Behance subscription during Pandemics, thanks Ionos / 1&1 for their free hosting offer during Pandemics too. No pay subscription was requested to deliver this project templates online, otherwise it would not have been possible. Thanks to all friends who helped for sharing this project to a broader audience.

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

BEYOND FUNCTIONALITY: AESTHETICS / QUALITY OF EXPERIENCE.

1st.-EMOTIONAL SUPPORT.

Pandemics´ mobility restrictions, social distance, home confinement, temporary quarantines apart from others are happening all over the world at the same time. As a result, there is a global urgent need for emotional support, tools or objects to deal with these stressing conditions, ideas to support individual resilience. This initiative and object function is Emotional support.

HOW: By designing and free providing a paper PET online. Do it yourself, build it up! This itself helps, whether if individual or in groups. Then, you got a unique loyal companion through the rough times, helping you express out inner complex emotions. We are all together!

2nd-FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION.

There is in this design a ´Form follows Function´ principle driven from the concept inception to the final object and even the media to broadcast and build it, make it real.

HOW: The object form is by means a literal concept: archetypical ´home´ prism. Being this CLEAR, the object does work fine: purpose, ways of use, meaning, context, and user enjoyment remain clear instantly merely by form.

3rd.- SCALE / DIMENSION.

Design scale condition is that it fits in one hand. Tangibility itself works as only dimension requirement. Economy, Function, Form and Medium provide the object REAL SIZE.

HOW: By fiiting the design to be fully explained and ready to work from one only regular size paper (A4/American Letter). Graphic instructions: templates´ upper left corner shows a small axonometric view of expected result, no text needed.

4th.-REST FROM SCREENS BY HANDS ON CRAFTS.

Simple crafts may help you relax yourself from screens overload. When sharing crafts through the web, via digital devices, screens are only the first step to pre-handle this real tangible object. As soon as you print template and focus on paper, speed slows down, touch becomes pleasant, warm and smooth.

Key objectives for inclusion

INCLUSION.

1st. UNIVERSAL.

Despite written language, the tangible language of real objects is universal. Everywhere in the world, regardless of your mother-tongue, this design is easy to be understood, then built up, then enjoyed. Easy intuitive geometry works for users worldwide. Human hands, intelligence, skills, senses and emotions may be quite similar around the globe, this is great news for this human centered design project.

2nd. DIVERSITY.

Offering one only finished design did not make sense. Pandemics are global, this is happening to every human being around the world, and every human is unique. Offering same product to everyone does not work here. Therefore, we can offer some different types, similar but different. This is why Quarantino was launched with four available models from the start. There is the right of personal choice. Choose the one you prefer, this is free choice among diverse options. Diverse objects for a diverse humankind.

3rd. CUSTOMIZABLE.

Besides four main available templates to choose, all of them open to your personal customization through color or material techniques, there is a fifth one: the BLANK template.

The blank template allows even wider customization options, understood as an invitation for free personal expression. Besides color or material, this template lets the user even redraw brand new details, including face or mood expression, left free to user imagination, skills and need to express.  Hand crafted customization works fine here, but the blank template unlocked digital format allows for Open Source free graphics / picture editors to work on them digitally if preferred.

4th. OPEN DESIGN: RE-SHARE.

As an Open Design, this blank template invites other creators to join and embrace the natural evolution of this project design. Just create your own product version, sign it after and re-share for free to the community again. Creative Commons BY license helps making it possible.

Results in relation to category

As online downloadable product, its own web site reports back on overall track impact. This feedback, kindly provided by Google Analytics, reveals these figures:

1st-The web received over 1,500 visits during first year.

Exactly, 1,586 visitors since first launch, april 2020, last checked may, 19th, 2021.

2nd.-Visitors found the initiative mainly from Google browser, then followed by specific domain URL created for it http://www.quarantino.es, and in smaller size from other sites ( like colcod.com, or Instagram).

3rd-Most relevant traffic peaks came from highlighted referrals, as follows:

-Other CoVID-19 help sites, such as the commercial campaign named “Pienso, luego actúo, www.piensoluegoactuo.com, sponsored by the telco company Yoigo.

-Educational/Creative crafts promoters, such as Chiquitectos, organizer of playful and fun workshops for children based upon architectural core values.

-Citations referring to the initiative from Google´ Classroom, which hopefully means it is being used for some formal educational/academic purposes.

4th.-On visitors´ most used navigators, first is Google Chrome (67%), then Mozilla´Firefox user (17%) s and third, Apple´s Safari browser (14%). Left 2% users´ browser reveals they are using smartphones or tablet devices rather than computers.

5th.-On reached audience´ Operative Systems, most used is by far Windows (53%), then Android (14%), then iPhone (12%) and Linux (11%), McIntosh (8%) and Unix (3%).

6th.-Visitors came mainly from Spain, as the web is only available in Spanish yet, but also from other many countries around Europe and abroad.

   -Spain visitors make 59,8%, USA visitors 9,65%, and Ireland was 4,92% web audience.

-Close behind, Belgium shows 4,73%, Germany 3,34%, The Netherlands 2,84%, and Perú 1,64%. Followed by users from Rusia, 1,51%, France, 1,26% and Canada, 1%.

-Last, but not least, visitors came from United Kingdom, Turkey, Ecuador, Colombia, Poland, Mexico, Austria, Denmak, Ucrania, etc.

How Citizens benefit

INVOLVEMENT OF CITIZENS AND REACHED IMPACT.

This initiative was launched as an individual risk venture, but soon it received the support and involvement of family, friends, and awoke the interest of many colleagues, educational professionals and other associations and companies commited to the highest corporate and civil social responsibility support.

1st.- NEAR ENVIRONMENT. Family and dear relatives support. In the early beginning, this concept was born as an inside telematic gift to my dearest relatives, but soon they wanted to get involved into making it reach a wider audience. Some helped with a video, edited and used to showcase how to build up the object. Also, their kind help was appreciated when dealing with social networks/community management. Thank you all.

IMPACT: Few, but true and valuable.

2nd.-EDUCATIONAL / CULTURAL SECTOR SUPPORT. It was so polite and welcome when Chiquitectos, company whose work is mainly based on educational workshops for children and teenagers on key core values from the architecture discipline, contacted to support and help broadcasting this initiative to a wider audience. Thank you, Mrs. Almudena de Benito, thank you Chiquitectos.

IMPACT: Interesting visitors flow increase.

3rd.- BRAND/CORPORATE SUPPORT. The initiative was also confidently showed and explained to some close friends and professionals, see if their companies would be interested in sponsoring or getting to a deal for mutual profit helping launching it, but this never led to any formal engagement or agreement for sponsorship of any kind, nor terms and conditions arranged at all.

IMPACT: None. It never happened. Still available and listener to other chances.

4th.- OTHER SUPPORT: ”Pienso luego actúo” is a campaign launched by the telco company Yoigo in Spain, broadcasting diverse initiatives helping through coVID-19 crisis. Thanks for selecting Quarantino among your recommendations.

IMPACT: Positive.

Innovative character

INNOVATIVE CHARACTER of the project.

1st. There is no innovation at all in this project.

There is no innovation here, and it is fine. Best designs ever are timeless, maybe this one is not.

The right thing at the right time.

2nd. ANALOG meets DIGITAL and viceversa.

This is merging conceptual geometric information, -easily transferrable through telecommunication devices- with the real, tangible, material world in its more simple and efficient way.

There is an added layer of true value revealed here: fast-speed information consume for read-and-waste, watch-and-waste, listen-and-waste, while not focusing deeply on anything happens many often nowadays. When does information become valuable to you? May this initiative suggest that true value depends on your active response to it. Seeing the template and then forget is a fair option. But getting to use the template and build the tangible object up is the really enriching experience, the valuable one. It is up to the user. Value and personal revenue depends on your degree of involvement to the gifted experience. Take your time, focus on making it happen right and see how it feels. Use all of your senses. Opposite to click and go. Different than order and get it ready. Complimentary. Necessary. TANGIBLE. A REAL EXPERIENCE .

3rd. UNIQUE VALUES.

There is many other initiatives for ready paper-cut crafts available, some of them really admiring and launched at the right same time with similar purpose. Templates for building iconic buildings, for instance. But those scaled objects, as models, hardly deal with complex feelings. As opposite, this initiative offers a brand-new product, custom designed for a unique purpose and time, real size, with some humble yet honest emotional communication potential. There is the EMPATHY factor here, this design here helps to release emotions out in a constructive way. This design aims to interact and response, welcoming caresses, kisses, hugs, laughs and tears. Inner feellings matter.
