Summary
CONTEST „I GROW UP PATRIOT”- Regional Administration Smolyan together with Mihalkovo company for bottling naturally carbonated mineral water have conducted competition “I grow up a patriot”. This initiative aims to promote the interest of children in the area to traditional Bulgarian values, life and culture.Everyone child from Smolyan region could take part of this competition with its own photos wearing traditional Rhodope costume. Only the children of the organizers of the initiative could not take part. Тhe journalist Petia Gaidarova have given the idea of this competition in 2016 year which was supported by Regional Administration Smolyan. It was conducted the 6th edition of the competition last year and took part over 180 children.The idea of this photo competition aims to show the beauty of the traditional Bulgarian costumes and how proud the children are wearing the folklore clothes and embroidery on more and more events. This initiative encourages young Bulgarians to respect folklore, to preserve the Bulgarian identity, to wear the Bulgarian costume with pride and to make folklore motifs a part of our everyday life. The photo contest “I grow up a patriot” was completed with new contest for story "I saw the kindness", which aims to attract young authors to write about the kindness of the people around us and encourage young people to be noble, polite and to do good deeds. That is why the initiative is gaining more and more popularity and every year more and more children participate. All participants receive prizes - patriotic T-shirts and a calendar with photos of children participating in the competition. The jury awards the best photographs, divided into four age groups, which receive additional awards. State institutions and branch organizations also support the initiative by providing prizes for participants in the photo contest.The organizers want this competition to become national and more children and young people to participate in the near future.

There is an official award ceremony but because of Covid 19 crisis the awards are being sent to children. Promoting the initiative at regional level, intergenerational exchange, preservation of traditions, culture and folklore creavity.

This initiative is related to the traditional customs and the local historical heritage, traditions, way of life. The initiative is in partnership with regional, local authorities, citizens, children, schools, families. The initiative covers all target groups from Smolyan district. This inicitive show how traditions are passed down from generation to generation.

The competition "I grow up a patriot" can be multiplied in areas that have preserved cultural heritage, traditions, practical experience and skills. This will show the diversity of folklore areas and encourage the participation of young people to continue and preserve traditions.
