Project Description

The aim of this project is to design social welfare services that work as shelters for homeless people. In particular this part of the project is focused on a shelter that provides protection against cold, and in the same time spreads a message of solidarity and kindness. This shelter is called Scorz that in the neapolitan dialect means rind, peel, skin. The shelter design was inspired by origami and some natural structures like the cocoon. It is light, portable like a backpack and sustainable.

Description of the project

Summary

This object created a network between associations, municipalities and the factory that produces it. The shelter is requested expecially in winter, but it has been used also in school projects to get the students aware of the problem and the crisis of homelessness.

Key objectives for sustainability

The shelter is 100% recyclable made in FSC certified high-quality cardboard and, in case of storm, it has in its core an emergency plastic sheet that is not glued to the cardboard. It has less impact compared to a normal tent and it is made in Italy. The packaging of the shelter is made using 100% recycled paper from neapolitan region.

The shelter was designed to be temporary. On its surface are the emergency numbers of the city dorms.

The shelter was designed to be more communicative than a normal tent. On his surface there is the message "This is not the solution. This is a temporary shelter"

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

The shelter is designed as a second skin of a human being. It's foldable like an accordion and trough simple actions it turns into a cocoon-like shelter. On some of them we printed the crysalis skin, to communicate the metamorphosis that every human can have.

Key objectives for inclusion

This object created a network between associations, municipalities and the factory that produces it. The shelter is requested expecially in winter, but it has been used also in school projects to get the students aware of the problem and the crisis of homelessness.

Results in relation to category

Some people did a video of me giving this shelter to some homeless people in Naples and this video became viral. I was happy to see on Google Trends that the video helped to show the problem and get people more aware of the crisis.

How Citizens benefit

The project is a co-design one. It has been developed in the University of Naples, Fachhochschule of Potsdam and trough the participation of people during events and demonstrations. People left me a lot of suggestions trough a post-it wall and deep conversations.

Physical or other transformations

It refers to other types of transformations (soft investment)

Innovative character

I think the idea to give a temporary shelter is not new, but the project was born to embrace all the good things and values of the past projects in a single artifact. It'sinnovative because it works as a phisical shelter, but also it can be used as an educational object.

Also, kids can play with it.

Learning transferred to other parties

The project can be developed, testing other materials, because the foldable geometric origami-styled drawing is scalable and can be shared like an open-source project.
