Description of the project

Summary

Our project includes the idea of including touch screen survey kiosks on the bus stop. The commuters while waiting for bus, can attempt quizzes about their country (in our case, Hungary), and get to learn more about their country, culture and language. If local public transport authorities are willing to cooperate, we can have a price, such as a single ticket if they enter a valid email address, or a unique identifier after 100% finishing the quiz.
The project's overarching aim is to not only enhance the waiting experience at bus stops but also promote cultural education and community engagement. We aim to foster a sense of belonging and community in the heart of the commuters.
Our concept allows access to commuters of all age, however our primary target audience would be the young people, especially children, in helping them learn interesting facts about their country and cultivating a sense of belonging since a young age. We aim to reach a diverse audience, ensuring accessibility and inclusivity.
Our specific objectives are the following:
1) Cultural Education and Awareness: It will provide commuters a chance to review and learn up to date information about their country, culture and heritage. Commuters will know more about their country.
2) Enhanced Waiting Experience: Many people agree that waiting at the bus stop is boring. Our concept allows waiting at the bus stop a stimulating and a learning experience
3) Community building; It will also encourage fellow commuters to engage with each other, as they tackle the quizzes, hence fostering a strong sense of community, especially in relatively small settlements.

There are no achieved outcomes because this project is at the stage of an early development.

Key objectives for sustainability

Our concept is very sustainable, as small modifications to existing public infrastructure can make our concept from a dream to reality. We need minimum additional public space, or cause any inconvenience to the public to implement this idea.

In addition we can use kiosks powered by solar (where it is possible) to further reduce the environmental impact. This will make the running cost of the kiosks zero, apart from the maintenance cost.

One of the other ways how our project is sustainable is that it is timeless. All you have to do is update the quizzes on the kiosks, and the concept has become in line with the recent trends, and problems of the society.
Our concept is also sustainable in terms of educating the youth, as it will force them to review the knowledge they may already learnt in high school. Knowledge goes a long way in shaping not just the future but also the present of the society.

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

The design of the kiosks will be made such that it respects the local aesthetics of the location, but also incorporates traditional patterns and prints. It can have a picture of traditional things such as paprika, kurtoskalacs (chimney cake) etc.

One more important aspect of our concept is to keep the user interface very friendly. It will be simple to navigate, and attractive in its design. It will encourage people to participate in the quiz.

Our design will create an immersive experience, where the kiosks will spark curiosity with in the commuters, and the quiz will engage the computers until the bus arrives, which hopefully will r result in a reward for them.

Key objectives for inclusion

Bus stops are a highly public area, which people from all walks of life use. In this way our project is highly inclusive, as it includes anyone who uses the public transport, even if it is once a month. Our concept uses the accessibility of the bus stop to spread knowledge and awareness, with a lasting impact.

Our concept also eliminates the cost barrier as it is freely available to anyone traveling by the bus, or even walking across a bus stop. If the commuter is waiting for the bus, then the cost of time is also zero for the commuter.

It is highly inclusive to all government as a bus stop can be found in every place, with a population large enough. It can be even incorporated in to bus stops outside of the city, or on the outskirts to reach a even bigger audience.

How Citizens benefit

Citizens and civil society have played a pivotal role in the success of the project, as their involvement has contributed to the project's positive impact.

Our concept is based on involving the commuters of all types to engage with the kiosks. Hence public involvement is a very important aspect of our concept. If we are able to convince the public transport companies, the computer might also win free tickets.
Commuters are also responsible for taking care and maintaining the kiosks, as it is a important public property.

The impact of the involvement as previously highlighted includes increased cultural awareness, generating a positive social environment, and making waiting at the bus stop , a positive experience.

Physical or other transformations

It refers to other types of transformations (soft investment)

Innovative character

Interactive Waiting Experience: Unlike traditional bus stop environments, the project transforms waiting time into an interactive and educational experience. It breaks away from the conventional notion of bus stops as purely utilitarian spaces.
Cultural Enrichment: While many public transportation initiatives focus solely on efficiency and connectivity, this project places a strong emphasis on cultural education and enrichment. It goes beyond the basics of transportation and promotes a deeper understanding of the world's cultures.
User-Centered Design: The project's user-friendly interfaces, multilingual options, and accessibility features prioritizes the needs and preferences of diverse commuters, making the waiting experience more inclusive and enjoyable.
Community Involvement: The active engagement of civil society and local organizations in content curation, advocacy, and sustainability fosters a sense of community ownership and collaboration, which is often lacking in traditional transit services.
Sustainability Integration: The project integrates sustainability as a core element, from energy-efficient technology to responsible electronic waste disposal.
Data-Driven Improvement: Regular feedback collection and assessment of the project's impact on commuters' cultural awareness and engagement set it apart from conventional transit services.
Promotion of Multilingualism: Offering quizzes in multiple languages promotes linguistic diversity and inclusivity, which may not be a common feature in traditional transportation services.
Innovation in Funding Models: By exploring partnerships with local businesses, sponsorships, and advertising, the project develops innovative funding models that help ensure its long-term viability, which is often not typical in mainstream transit initiatives.

Disciplines/knowledge reflected

The design and implementation of your project involve a multidisciplinary approach, drawing from various fields to ensure its success. Here's a breakdown of the disciplines and knowledge fields reflected in our project:

User Experience (UX) Design:

Professionals in UX design would be crucial in creating an interface that is user-friendly and engaging. They would consider factors such as the placement of touch screens, the ease of navigation, and the overall user interaction with the kiosks. This field ensures that the surveys are accessible and enjoyable for a diverse audience.
Cultural Studies and Anthropology:

Experts in cultural studies and anthropology would contribute to the creation of quiz content. They would ensure that the questions accurately represent the cultural, historical, and traditional aspects of the community. This helps in promoting accurate information and fostering a sense of cultural appreciation among users.
Software Development and Programming:

Software developers and programmers play a crucial role in creating the backend infrastructure of the touch screen kiosks. They would develop the software needed for changing questions based on patterns, ensuring smooth functionality, security, and the ability to adapt to evolving needs.
Urban Planning and Architecture:

Professionals in urban planning and architecture would be involved in deciding the optimal placement of the kiosks at bus stops. They would ensure that the installation does not disturb public activities, integrates well with the urban environment, and adheres to safety and accessibility standards.
Data Science and Analytics:

Data scientists would be instrumental in analyzing the data collected through the surveys. They can identify patterns, trends, and user preferences, helping in the continuous improvement of the quiz content and overall user experience.

Methodology used

Designing Quizzes: Create informative and engaging quizzes that cover various aspects of Hungarian culture, history, notable figures, and geography.
Preliminary Knowledge Survey: Conduct a survey among international students, expats as well as locals to assess their current knowledge about Hungarian culture and Hungary in general. This step will help us to tailor the quizzes to the specific needs and interests of the target audience.
Engage with Local Municipality: Initiate discussions with the local municipality to gain their support and approval for the project. Collaboration with local authorities is crucial for securing necessary permits and support.
Supplier Selection: Search for the reliable suppliers for the automated survey machines (kiosks) that will be placed at bus stops. Ensure that the technology is user-friendly and robust.
Legal Considerations: Address legal aspects such as permits, data privacy, and any regulatory requirements for setting up and maintaining the kiosks.
Collaborate with Public Transport Company: Work closely with the local public transport company to identify suitable bus stop locations and ensure the kiosks are integrated seamlessly into the transportation infrastructure.
Traffic Analysis: Analyze the passenger traffic at each bus station to determine the most heavily frequented locations, which would be the primary targets for kiosk installation.
Pilot Test: Begin with a pilot test at one selected bus station to evaluate the effectiveness and acceptance of the project. Gather feedback and make any necessary adjustments.
Expansion Planning: Based on the pilot's success, plan for a gradual expansion to other bus stations in both large and small cities.
By following this methodology, we can effectively implement our project to raise awareness about Hungarian culture and potentially replicate it for other topics and countries, promoting a sense of unity and belonging among residents and internationals.

How stakeholders are engaged

Driven by the fact that we as a group of students have to use public transport very prevalently in our daily life activities, we noticed that there is a large amount of time while you are waiting for the bus that is not productive. This could be used to get cultural education about the country live in and cultivate a greater sense of belonging to this community. The city of Debrecen hosts around 10,000 students, and this could help them feel proud about where they are.

However, this idea is still in its early stages and therefore has not been implemented. We can not provide you with the information about how the local, regional, national and european authorities have played a part. However we expect their full cooperation in promoting and supporting us to implement this project.

Global challenges

Cultural Preservation and Education: The project addresses the global challenge of preserving and promoting cultural heritage and education. By spreading knowledge about Hungarian history and culture, it contributes to the preservation of cultural identities and traditions. This local solution has the potential to inspire similar initiatives in other regions, addressing the global challenge of cultural preservation.
Inclusivity and Accessibility: The project tackles the global challenge of inclusivity and accessibility to education and information. It ensures that anyone, regardless of their socioeconomic status or background, can access this valuable information.
Community Building and Social Cohesion: The project fosters community building and social interaction among commuters, addressing the global challenge of social cohesion and unity. By engaging citizens in discussions about cultural quizzes, the project promotes a sense of belonging and shared identity, transcending social, cultural, and economic differences.
Technological Innovation and Accessibility: The project leverages technology and innovation to make cultural knowledge accessible to the public. This local solution demonstrates the potential of technology in addressing global challenges related to education and accessibility.
Scalability and Knowledge Dissemination: The adaptable model of the project can be replicated in other countries to raise awareness about a wide range of topics, such as environmental sustainability or local history. This scalability addresses the global challenge of knowledge dissemination and awareness on a broader scale, promoting inclusive education and global awareness.

Learning transferred to other parties

Our concepts transferable in 2 ways.
1) Anywhere: our concept can be applied to anywhere (with in EU or outside EU) with bus stops. There is no need to build new infrastructure, or new public spaces. Just install a kiosk, at an already existing bus stop, and create an immediate impact.
2) Everything: the quizzes in the kiosk can be adjusted to any topic, that might trouble any community to raise awareness or to impart important information in the general public. For example the public can be educated about climate change, or sex education. It could also be used to create an acceptance about different cultures and diversity in the public.

In summary our concept is highly customizable to any location in the world with any issue.
