Description of the project

Summary

Osnova is an architectural project designed to help rebuild Ukrainian villages. At its core, it is a constructor. It consists of a core. The main space of the building, with a high ceiling, good lighting, and a shelter on the 1st floor. And a set of blocks that differ in both function and size. A sufficient variety of functional schemes is achieved due to the variability of planning solutions.
The basis is a multifunctional building. It can be a kindergarten, a school, a headquarters, a village council, a cultural center, workshops, and even a church, if necessary. And all of these things at the same time. Because there are many villages and many needs, and they will certainly change over time.
The main target group of this project is migrants and internally displaced people who were forced to leave their homes due to Russian aggression in Ukraine. And after the de-occupation and liberation of the territories by Ukraine, they will be able to return home. the project aims to help them and encourage their return.
So far, the main achievement of the project is the development of a high-quality and sustainable architectural concept, together with several stakeholders, as well as the potential implementation of a pilot in a village in central Ukraine.

Key objectives for sustainability

Osnova is a project that aims to help rebuild the Ukrainian village that suffered from Russian armed aggression.
To rebuild it not only physically, but also socially and culturally. The de-occupied territories and villages are mostly very damaged. All social infrastructure has been destroyed, and all utilities are broken or not working. Residential buildings are damaged and the surrounding area is mined. Thus, after the territory's de-occupation, a person's main question is whether he or she should return there. And the logical question is "Why should I return"?
Osnova aims to answer this question. The project envisages the creation of a "starting point", so to speak, to create a basic infrastructure for returning people and to help rebuild the villages. The building itself is multifunctional and designed in such a way that it can be easily transformed over time to meet the new needs of the Village. It can first be a logistics and humanitarian center, then turn into a village council, and then become a multifunctional building with a school and kindergarten.
In this way, Osnova is a shell and a tool that each particular village can use and fill to its own specifications.
Thus helping to rebuild Ukrainian villages not only physically, but also socially and culturally. In this way, it helps people to return to their homes and villages without further stimulating urbanization.

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

The village is the foundation of Ukrainian society. It is our DNA that has always preserved and cultivated Ukrainian national values - traditions, faith, language, hard work and freedom.
The Ukrainian village is an effective and unique system of comprehensive material and spiritual life support, national human development and national preservation that has been formed over thousands of years.
The policy of the Soviet Union was aimed at destroying Ukrainian culture and the physical destruction of the peasants.
During Russia's attack on Ukraine, thousands of villages were damaged, and hundreds were destroyed.
In Russian, there is a word for village and a word for countryside. The difference is that a village is a countryside with a church. In Ukraine, there was no village without a church. Since ancient times, the church has simultaneously performed educational, educational, cultural, and institutional functions.
Osnova is a multifunctional infrastructure building that is designed to help and unite people, as the Church did in ancient times. The architecture of the building was inspired by one of the most characteristic and distinctive periods of Ukrainian architecture the Cossack Baroque. This architectural style arose as a result of the Cossacks becoming patrons of the arts and sponsoring the construction of social and cultural buildings. Given the context of the time, most of the buildings had common features with fortresses or military structures.
Because the main material was stone it served as a shelter for villagers in the event of attacks. This style had the following characteristic features:
- white walls, green metal elements, and decor;
- small windows, large wall surface;
- the buildings were equilateral crosses in plan;
- the main element of the decor was light and shadow, and reliefs on the facades;
The visual language of Osnova is a modern reinterpretation of the Cossack Baroque of the time and is the vernacular of the Ukrainian village.

Key objectives for inclusion

The project is inclusive in that it aims to improve the overall living conditions of all villagers. The functions that Osnova includes are publicly available and will be useful to the majority of the village residents. These features and the project will create more favorable social conditions in the village, thereby encouraging people to return and rebuild the village. The project should be implemented with the support of the local community and local authorities. It helps the local authorities to partially relieve themselves of the burden that social infrastructure has to bear. And through smart organization and spatial planning, makes it possible to combine many vital functions under one roof. This allows for more efficient use of resources.

How Citizens benefit

The idea of the project was born in a dialogue with one of the rural communities in central Ukraine. They had a request to build a small kindergarten for 20 children. But realizing the financial burden of such an infrastructure unit for a small village, they also requested that it be a more universal building. One that could be additionally used, for example, it should have a shelter to protect against air raids. Since there used to be a school in the same village, but due to the lack of sufficient children, it had to be closed and the building was transferred to a rehabilitation center for the military.
In the course of our work and dialogue with the community, we came up with the idea to look at this in a more unified way and to imagine a solution that could help not a specific village, but answer most of the requests that the village could have.

Physical or other transformations

It refers to a physical transformation of the built environment (hard investment)

Innovative character

The project is unique in its kind. It answers a unique question and problem - the rebuilding of the Ukrainian village. Given that this problem arose less than a year and a half ago, after the beginning of Russia's armed aggression, it is difficult to compare it with other projects in this area. there may be only a few projects on the topic of Ukrainian villages and restoration, but they are all very different and respond to different needs and problems. Thus, they complement each other rather than compete. I think it will take some more time for this project to be compared with other projects in this area. At the moment, the ideas proposed in the Osnova system, although simple, are nevertheless unique and worth testing in a pilot project.

Disciplines/knowledge reflected

The project is an architectural form that emerged in response to a large number of different requests. These requests came from all the participants in the process and from the context of today's Ukraine.
For example, the project requires shelter, which is a response to Russia's military aggression and the danger to human life. Therefore, the project was consulted by experts who are familiar with defense structures. The project also involved experts from children's educational institutions, including the Montessori system. The village council and local residents were also involved in the project and conceptualization.
The most important result of this interaction was the large number of possible options for functional content and combinatorics. All of them filled this "constructor" with additional parts.

Methodology used

The main approach in this project was the idea of creating a basic uniform solution that can be developed and moved forward in the future. An idea that has the possibility of sustainable development and can continue its life on its own.
Thus, we created a system of planning solutions, a system of facade solutions, and a system of structural solutions. Each time the project is implemented, each village has the opportunity to choose the most appropriate elements for itself and use them. Or they can develop solutions on their own and thereby supplement and finalize the system.

How stakeholders are engaged

The project was initiated by the Ukrainian NGO Tigrolovy and the architectural charity foundation Onova. The village council of Dmytrivka village, Kaharlytskyi district, acted as the project customer and agreed to provide a land plot for the construction of the first pilot, with the function of a kindergarten. Each participant in the process contributed to the formation of a universal idea that can be multiplied in other connectors, not just in the village of Dmytrivka.
As the project is still in its early stages, potentially more partners will join the project.

Global challenges

The main objective of the project is to help rebuild Ukraine and restore the Ukrainian village. With these local solutions, the project contributes to broader global issues, such as post-war reconstruction, restoration of natural rural settlements, and the return of migrants and internally displaced persons home. And it helps to reduce the overall level of urbanization.

Learning transferred to other parties

The whole project is essentially an attempt to create a sustainable system of solutions that can be replicated elsewhere, for other needs, and by other people in other villages. Thus, depending on the need, each village can independently choose the necessary building configuration to best meet their needs. This is also taken into account in terms of visual decoration. The system has several basic principles for facade solutions, but any creativity is welcome. Ukrainians are quite creative, and they will gladly customize their buildings depending on the region and context.
The project envisages the creation of a library of solutions and elements that will be available in the public domain, and anyone can use them.
