Description of the project

Summary

The aim of the project proposal is twofold. The main aim is to create an educational hub for young talents, in a barn situated in the proximity of a cultural heritage site. The secondary aim would be to launch a professional reconversion programme for talented adults from diaspora who decide to come back home.
The target group is represented by the youth and adults who want to take part in the professional reconversion process, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The specific objectives are:
•To provide a sustainable and inclusive learning environment that fosters creativity, curiosity, and collaboration among the learners.
•To renovate and equip the barn with modern facilities and technologies that can support various educational, professional reconversion, and cultural programs.
•To design and deliver a curriculum that covers topics such as digital skills, financial education, innovation, arts, languages, reasoning skills, etc. that is tailored to the needs and interests of the trainees.
•To create a network of mentors, experts, and partners who can provide guidance, feedback, and opportunities for the youth, and adults who want to participate in the reconversion program.
•To promote the values and principles of the New European Bauhaus initiative, such as circular economy, design for all, cultural diversity, etc.
The expected outcomes are:
•Improved educational attainment and employability of the learners, as well as increased self-confidence and motivation.
•Enhanced social cohesion and integration of the learners, as well as reduced isolation and marginalization.
•Strengthened local identity and culture, as well as increased awareness and appreciation of nature.
•Contributed to the regeneration and revitalization of the village and to the European Green Deal goals.
The project fits in the 3rd category because it addresses the needs of a territory and a community that face specific economic, social, and physical challenges.

Key objectives for sustainability

The key objectives of the project in terms of sustainability are:
•To provide access to quality education for youth from rural and disadvantaged areas;
•To enhance the skills and employability of the participants;
•To stimulate the creativity and entrepreneurship of the participants;
•To promote the values of diversity, inclusion, solidarity, and citizenship among the participants;

•To improve the energy efficiency and environmental performance of the barn;
•To set the founding pillars for a professional reconversion programme in the North-Eastern region;
•To implement a self-sustaining concept to finance the OPEX of EDUHUB.
These objectives will be met by:
•Renovating the old barn using natural and recycled materials, such as wood and stone. We will also replace the current asbestos roof with an eco-friendly roof (shingle tiles) while keeping the original structure and features of the barn.
•Designing the interior of the barn as a multifunctional, modular, and flexible space that can accommodate different activities and needs.
•Equipping the barn with modern technologies and equipment (laptops, interactive tables, tablets, internet access, already existent, projectors, printers, and scanners.
•Developing a curriculum and a program of activities that are tailored to the local context and the interests of the participants. The curriculum would cover topics such as digital skills, financial education, entrepreneurship, social innovation, environmental awareness, cultural diversity, and civic engagement.
•Engaging the local community. A partnership with local stakeholders has been already established and several activities have been already carried out.
•Helping the adults that return from diaspora to be integrated in the local workforce, via dedicated training sessions held by local experts.
•Hosting paid workshops by involving local craftsmen and artists.

Natural and organic materials will be used such as wood and stone, to create a connection with nature. Recycled and upcycled materials, such as metal, plastic, and glass, will be used to create a contrast with the natural elements.
•Incorporating elements of design and art that are inspired by the local traditions, crafts, and folklore. Motifs, patterns, and symbols that are typical of the Romanian culture, such as geometric shapes, floral designs and animal figures will be used. Artworks and crafts made by local artists and artisans, such as paintings, sculptures, pottery, and textiles will be displayed in the HUB and local musicians and storytellers will be invited to perform in the barn.

Global challenges

The project addresses several global challenges that are related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), respectively:
•Quality Education. The project aims to provide high-quality education and training to young talents in a rural area that lacks access to adequate educational opportunities. By transforming an old barn into an educational hub, a learning environment that leads to innovation, creativity, and lifelong learning could be created.
•Decent Work and Economic Growth. The project aims to foster social innovation and social entrepreneurship among young talents, which could generate employment, income, and social impact for them and their communities. By equipping your learners with the tools and resources they need to identify problems and design solutions, the initiative could enable them to create value for themselves and others, while addressing some of the social and environmental challenges that affect their area and beyond.
•Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. The project aims to use innovative technologies and methods to deliver high-quality education and training to young talents. By using digital tools, blended learning, gamification, project-based learning, flexible and personalised learning experiences for the target group can be provided.
•Reduced Inequalities. The project aims to prioritise the places and people that need it the most, by focusing on a rural area that faces multiple challenges such as depopulation, poverty, and low educational attainment. By providing better opportunities for education, employment, and social inclusion for young talents in this area, inequalities that exist between urban and rural areas can be reduced (as well as between different groups of people based on their gender, age, ethnicity, disability, etc.)

Learning transferred to other parties

The following elements of the project could be replicated/transferred:
•The transformation of an old barn into an educational hub for young talents is a creative and sustainable way of reusing existing buildings and spaces, while providing opportunities for learning and innovation. This idea could be applied to other rural areas that have unused structures that could be renovated and repurposed for educational purposes.
•The location the project in Brăești is also relevant for the category 3 of the initiative as it is a rural area that faces challenges such as depopulation, poverty, and low educational attainment. The project could serve as a model for other similar areas that need to revitalise their communities and provide better opportunities for their youth.
•The involvement of the local community and stakeholders in the design and implementation of your project is another important element that could be replicated or transferred to other contexts. By engaging the local youth, educators, authorities, and civil society organisations, it is ensured that the proposed project responds to the actual needs of the people. This approach is aligned with the human-centred design methodology that underpins the NEB initiative.
•The use of innovative technologies and methods to deliver high-quality education and training to young talents is another element that could be replicated. For example, digital tools, blended learning, gamification, etc. could be used to provide flexible and personalised learning experiences for the target group.
•The focus on social innovation and social entrepreneurship as the main outcomes of the project is another element that could be transferred to other contexts. By equipping young talents with the skills and resources they need to identify problems in their own communities and design solutions for them, the project could contribute to addressing some of the social and environmental challenges that affect the region and beyond.
