Project Description

A future without conventional plastic. Use of by-products of dairy companies or food-waste from hotels and restaurants through circular economy for a bioplastic production that could be industrially bio-degrated.

Geographical Scope

Description of the project

Summary

Production of polylactic acid through polymerization process from food waste(circular economy) converting it into biodegradable products, e.g. packaging, agricultural bioplastics etc.

Key objectives for sustainability

In our mission for food waste management, we are trying to evolve the polymerization process through technology and trying to make it in a big scale afterwards.
In this way it is possible to decrease the ocean drilling preventing the extraction of fossil fuels and leading to a less polluted enviroment.
Bringing back carbon in the soil which helps for the growth of crops.

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

Through advertisment it is possible to promote these eco friendly products that could provide to the mindset of greek people that they can contribute to the protection of the greek sea, getting rid of the conventional plastic and absorb this kind of mentality to the next generations

Key objectives for inclusion

make the global market of the bioplastics and degradable plastics bigger for a decreasing of the prices.

How Citizens benefit

Protection of the ocean from tones of plastic that end up there and take 20-500 years to decompose.
Solving the problem of microplastics that pollute the water table and has been found to enter our food chain.
Organic waste prevention.
Reduction of CO2 emission.

Physical or other transformations

It refers to a physical transformation of the built environment (hard investment)

Innovative character

We are going to focus on research and development for a less energy cost production and reuse by-products. For a sustainable product, we will be based on electricity production from sun and/or wind.

Disciplines/knowledge reflected

Our team is based in knowledge in chemistry and biochemistry, as 2 of the members are based on this field and the third has a more spherical knowledge in themechanical topics.

How stakeholders are engaged

Communication with dairy industries in Greece and confirmation for cooperation for the needs of the project(basically based in Crete).
Discussion with universities and companies producing similar products.
Cooperation with italian companies and univeristies for developing the idea.
Upcoming cooperation with similar companies in Europe.

Global challenges

decrease emission of CO2, stop use of plastic, reuse food through circular economy

Learning transferred to other parties

There is the possibility to produce the PLA in dairy companies that already excist in industrial areas and distribute the products in a national level and then international.
