At the beginning of this year a unique concept was kickstarted in the middle of Amsterdam: the Upside Club. The Upside Club is the world's first regenerative, open source, scalable and repeatable retail concept. Here you will find all kinds of solutions to regenerate your daily life. It is a place where regenerative solutions are developed together with the neighbourhood. Where solutions and products are displayed that contribute to greater well-being and a healthy living environment.

Description of the project

Summary

We kickstarted a retailstore for Regenerative products in Amsterdam, to introduce people in the neighbourhood to the concept of regeneration. Regeneration focuses on restoring nature and supporting human well-being. We have a physical location where locals can: be informed on existing regenerative products and can buy them, introduce their own regenerative ideas, form partnerships on this topic, join inclusive events, spread knowledge and ideas/concepts on improving their local neighbourhood. Local people can come to the store or contact the UpsideClub team for any of their personal questions regarding responsible consumption.

Key objectives for sustainability

We are the first store that aims to sell a comprehensive range of regeneratively designed products, in this context we can be exemplary. The aim of the Upside Club is to empower a regenerative movement by starting local Upside Clubs to transfer neighbourhoods by offering, displaying, collecting, selling and or co-creating practical regenerative products and solutions to regenerate daily lives in a positive and convenient way. Moreover, we support the further development of regenerative products and concepts. Regeneration goes a step further than sustainability, and focusses on restoring ecosystems by using the most nature friendly resources in production techniques.

Our key objectives in terms of sustainability are:
- Providing nature based products
- Responsible production
- Developing sustainable partnerships
- Help improve the quality of life in the local neighbourhood in line with local wishes
- Involving locals in inclusive events

Key objectives for aesthetics and quality

Amsterdam is the most multi cultural city in the world, and therefore a great place to launch a 'club' with a focus on well-being for every living thing on this planet. The Upside Clubs aims to inspire and inform consumers and by-passers in an accessible, positive and self-explaining way. the Uspide Club aims to make them aware of the fact that you can choose products and services every day that make a positive contribution to our well-being. This is how we show that a regenerative life is a positive and thriving life where you feel happy and good because of making the right choices. With these positive choices you take care of your own health and well-being, and that of friends, family, your neighbours, your city and the earth. For current and future generations.

Key objectives for inclusion

We aim to serve the local people with regenerative solutions that match their wishes. Our physical location is located in the centre of Amsterdam, offering a range of products in different price classes. The end goal is to hand the club over to the local community.

How Citizens benefit

The Upside Club offers local residents and interested parties regenerative choices, and if there is no regenerative option available, the team will work with them to find concrete solutions: from daily groceries and clothing, to transport and the renovation of your home. This is how awareness grows about the positive impact that daily choices can make and the Upside Club helps consumers make positive choices. These choices have an impact on their own well-being, that of their immediate environment and neighborhood and ultimately on the quality of life on the planet. For now and future generations.

From an 'open platform', the Upside Club offers innovative designers and artists a platform to showcase and sell their regenerative products. You can also become a member of the club if you are interested. With your membership you benefit from the crowd-solving solutions and thus support your local community, accelerate and empower the regenerative movement and invest together with your neighbours in regenerative solutions that make your neighbourhood a better place.

Innovative character

The Upside Club is the world's first regenerative, open source, scalable and repeatable retail concept. The Upside Club aims to empower a regenerative movement by starting local clubs to transfer neighborhoods by offering/displaying/collecting/selling/co-creating practical regenerative products and solutions to regenerate daily lives in a positive and convenient way.

Disciplines/knowledge reflected

The Upside Club offers a display for designers, artists and makers to display their pioneering work and regenerative products. Regenerative design - be it in design thinking, product development or agriculture - is a recently emerging practice for researchers, designers and makers. Although the principles of regeneration are as old as life on earth, regeneration as a movement in western operating countries and companies is making its way.

The disciplines and knowledge fields reflected in the design and development of our concept are as follows:
- International Business
- Sustainable Consultancy
- Regenerative design
- Ethics

The combination of these make up a great resource. The added value is the interaction .

How stakeholders are engaged

We engaged local stakeholders to share their view and input on our pilot concept and further development sessions of the store, to see where we can fill in their wishes. The added value of their engagement was that their wishes present starting points in our search to products, and we will serve their wishes with matching solutions. The local stakeholders help create our assortiment of products.

Global challenges

We address the global challenges of Climate Change, Resource scarcity, Health Issues, Overconsumption, Colonization, Mental Health, Transparency.

Our economic system is incapable of repairing the self-created climate problem. That is why sustainability alone is not enough if we also continue to pursue economic growth. When it comes to consumer choices, fair and sustainable is often less bad, but we also have to realize that a constant 'more-more-more' will not repair the damage done. Regeneration offers a solution for this. The difference with sustainable products, whose impact on the ecosystem and society is neutral, is that regenerative products feed back. This way you know that the production process has no negative impact on the climate and working conditions, for example, but contributes to greater well-being and a healthy living environment.

Learning transferred to other parties

A key objective of the Upside Club is that it can be replicated and deployed in other cities and countries. To facilitate this deployment of Upside Clubs worldwide, 2023-2024 is dedicated to the development of a manual to start your local Upside Club. This manual will be accessible for anyone and free to download. The Upside Club is successful when the concept will spread worldwide as an idealistic chain of Upside Clubs. Anyone can start an Upside Club, as long as it contributes socio-environmentally, is non-profit and is regenerative.
